Question on strategy

Hello all,

So, quick question regarding strategy when in enemy waters. Do you run submerged during the day to avoid possible aircraft/patrols, and then surface at night? Or, simply run surface and focus all resources on watch hoping to see the enemy before they see you?

For example, I have a mission to drop a spy off in Portsmouth. I imagine that area is fairly well patrolled and I'm just not sure how to best maintain concealment, especially in the English Channel. I assuming Periscope depth during the day would be best, however Officer management may be difficult.

Any advice fellow captains and crew?

Thank you all very much in advance! :Kaleun_Salute:

Hi Malwulf Welcome to Subsim i dont have Uboat but the safety of your crew is paramount not exposing them to any more risk than necessary i would approach Portsmouth at night using the cloak of darkness i would travel submerged to the area. Only surfacing to charge my batteries or Dropping off the Agent then diving back to periscope depth
Getting spotted on the surface by aircraft will no doubt unleash a hornets nest from the tommies more aircraft and escorts hunting you bigtime
as a Uboat your bigest asset is stealth.

Agree with Blackswan. If you were hunting for ships, maybe a different story. But with a spy, I never want to be seen.

Thanks for the replies! I'll definitely go with submerged during the day. That's what I always do in SH5 anyway so hopefully it will work in Uboat.

Thanks again!

My strategy is quite similar to what blackswan40 described. So I'd recommend sticking to those tips.

Definitely play more conservative than you would in SH. In SH, death usually comes as a result of a number of screw ups in a row, here a single lucky hit is usually all it takes to doom you, usually by hitting the right compartment and separating sections of the ship from repair crews.

I have played this mission a few times. Usually approach Portsmouth during sunset with decks awash at high speeds. Before my sight range reveals the coast line, I submerge and continue with Große Fahrt on electric engines. The closer I get the slower I get, until just before the opening of the harbour I slow down to Langsame Fahrt. At this point it should have gotten pretty dark if you timed it correctly, around 10pm. So with slow speed you should be able to reach the inner part of the harbour at midnight when its the darkest. Run a long circle and head back out again so you are out at around 3-4am. Don't forget to replenish your oxygen every now and then, at best right before entering the inner harbour and right after exiting. And ffs don't raise your periscope!

Thank you all again for the helpful responses!

Now I've just got to figure out how to deal with the all too common crash to desktop feature. :haha:
