Does deactivating "Realistic Sensors" make the Radar/Sonar upgrades useless?

Hi,

I want to play SH4 U-Boat missions on low realism settings. But I was wondering: Its fun to upgrade the radar and hydrophone for your submarine, but only if a better system really upgrades the range of your sensors...

...If I have deactivated "Realistic Sensors", does upgrading your radar improve anything at all? Or has even the most basic Radar such a huge range with "Realistic Sensors" deactivated, that upgrading it makes no difference?

I know the rotating sensors are an improvement either way, but Im interested in the range.

Thanks in advance

"Realistic Sensors" just means that your boat is basically deaf, dumb and blind (kid sure plays a mean pinball - sorry, won't happen again)... but that setting, when selected, just makes the ranges that you can hear with the sonar, or see with the radar shorter. It doesn't restrict any acquisitions you make, so there should be an improvement in any upgrade, whether you have that selected or not. All the tick box does is set a multiplier factor, such that if you have it selected, the multiplier is 1x, so if the sonar is set to hear out to say 12,500 yards, that's what it is. When you de-select it, the multiplier might be 1.2, so now your sonar hears out to 15000 yards. Your sonar gets "upgraded", and is now good to 15,000 at the 1x setting, but is now good out to 18,000 yards with the tick box de-selected... These figures in no way insinuates what you, the user, might encounter in your game play, and is no guarantee of improved game play...

I love the 'fine print' disclaimer at the end of your excellent explanation Propbeanie!

Happy Hunting!

:D Yeah, ya gotta be careful what you say in today's "modern" worldly environment... My wife and I just got finished doing a regular will and a "Living" will at the lawyers' (btw, what thuh?? what is "Living" about a will for when you're dying???)... I'm full of boring legal-eeze... However, I did NOT stay at a Holiday Inn Express, so I'm no smarter than I was yesterday, just more prone to nod-off and fall asleep, especially as I try to read (and make sense of) what the lawyer sent me in the mail to sign... :o

Ah so with Realistic Sensors on my hydrophone reaches (for example) 1000m, and when I upgrade it to the cool crystal-version it reaches 2000m. When I deactivate Realistic Sensors I get 3000m with the normal hydrophone, and the crystal version gets me 5000.

(I also made the numbers up)
