Das Boot Voice Mod Not Working on Steam

Hey there,

I'm a relatively new skipper, went on and off with SH4 for about 3 months and racked up 100,000 tons with the Wahoo over a few patrols in a recent career. I decided to get the U-boat missions DLC so I could begin to mod the game a little more, and decided to get the Das Boot voice mod since a German crew speaking perfect English seemed a little off.

I looked up how to download mods for SH4 and picked up JSGME and put it into my Silent Hunter folder in Steam. My SH4 folder looks like this:

I put the unpacked sound mod into the MODS folder and activated it on JSGME before saving the mod profile on another folder.

I have no idea how to fix the issue, any advice on how to?

The main problem is displayed in your "path" for the game, with that

C:\ Program Files (x86) \ Steam \ ...

With the "..." representing the rest of the path. The ~bad~ part is the "Program Files (x86) part. Microsoft "protects" that folder, and when you make changes to files in the folder, and all of its sub-folders, and don't use a proper "Windows" program, then Windows will put all of the files it thinks are important back to what they were before you used JSGME. So Windows interprets your use of JSGME and altering the files of SH4 as an unauthorized attempt to subvert Windows...

What you need to do is back-off all mods, and use your Steam app to choose a different directory to install to. Lots of folks just delete the "Program Files (x86)" portion of the path, or change it to "Games" or whatever. THEBERBSTER has a post:

and I did a screengrab of my SH3 and SH5 installs to show how my 17 y.o. showed me how to do it...

Which is what dodougla mentions in THEBERBSTER's post...

Once you get your SH4 game (or any other program that takes text edits via JSGME or similar) out of the Windows Protection Program (not a real entity), then when you do mods, they'll "stick" and function as intended (unless some other things get messed up)...
