You're very own "Red October" moment!

I'm writing this to hear about others experiences where you use the other boat's fish against it.

My one time thus far since I started playing CW, was completely unintentional and awesome when I realize what happened.

I was trying to dodge three fish, two helcopter dropped and one sub launched against an Akula (NATO). The two air dropped had descended as I was diving 20 degree down angle and passing 500 ft, while I was tracking the Akula to come around behind her, she detected me and fired on a turn as I was building speed to get away from the two air dropped. I had already launched a noise maker and a moss to cover my aft. (I'm not a skilled skipper so fault me not :-P)

I passed under the Akula as we were turning into each other and lost track of the sub launched fish as it was still seeking but the other two were had tracked on me. Hoping that the noise from the Akula would confuse the other two fish, as I continue my turn and go to go shallow, I hear the quick loud ping, thinking that of the air launch fish were close, only to see the Akula's fish pass right by me and hit the Akula bow on!

I actually screamed YAH! Hahaha I'm sad. I know.:har::D

My favourite moment like that was while facing off against a Sierra in the USS Indianapolis. We were playing an intense game of cat and mouse, stalking each other after I had sank the boat full of Spetsnaz she was escorting. I detect a torpedo launch, so I employ one of my favourite tactics for torpedo evasion. Back emergency (to get the torpedo to arm early so it's not right in my face when it arms), wait for it to arm, then launch a MOSS. If the torpedo loses the MOSS when it passes and turns back towards me, I usually launch a noisemaker and that usually turns it back to the MOSS, and by the second acquisition, the MOSS is too far from me for it to reacquire me. Well, the Sierra must have assumed the MOSS was me going to flank to evade, so he fired... just about every torpedo in the Soviet Union at it. About six in total, including the one already in the water. Well, they all followed the MOSS, while I was quietly creeping away in the other direction. Now, just by coincidence, the MOSS stopped pretty much right next to him, and his own massive salvo did him in. The Sierra was still getting hit by torpedoes when she was simply debris resting on the bottom.

Nice job, Skippers.

I hope more stories will be posted. I don't have the game, yet (PC parts are on the way), but am really looking forward to playing.

Also! One of my favourite tactics for dealing with a large amount of enemy submarines is to launch a MOSS right through their group! I know it's a bit gamey, and probably only works due to the limits of AI, but they usually end up launching a ridiculous amount of fish into the middle of their group and they all die. :o

This becomes a major tactic of mine in the 1968 campaign if I get shot at first. I'll go to flank and rush the torpedo, maneuvering around it along the way and leaving a knuckle behind to keep it confused. The torpedoes react predictably to countermeasures, and I am able to use that to my advantage. I'll race right at the launching submarine at flank, then turn behind him and put my screws to his. He'll normally eat at least one of his own torpedoes, possibly two. That might take care of his salvo. 1.07 beta the torpedoes will occasionally home in on wrecks (maybe in spite of "sunk" status the possibility of air pockets still exists) and sometimes they'll track in on a sunken kill. If there is another enemy sub lurking nearby, I'll make the same maneuvers and he'll get killed as well. If not, I can usually evade until they run out. I just have to watch out for the self destruct at end-of-run. But like I said, the torpedoes react predictably to countermeasures and evasions, turning off ~30 degrees before circling back in. I can take advantage of that and keep them at bay. If I'm really lucky, I can duck around some ice and get the torpedo to strike the iceberg. I'll leave the encounter with my load intact and a bunch of dead subs in my wake.
