How to use MOSS
 
So if my sub has a loadout including MOSS devices what do I use them for?
  1. Do I launch them as a way to fool enemy units into thinking I am somewhere else?
  2. Once they are launched can their direction or depth be changed?
  3. Can the enemy hear them being launched like a torpedo transit?I am wondering if my actual position will be given away by the launching of the MOSS?

MOSS decoys attract torpedoes and enemy sonar operators alike. You can use them to break contact with surface ships moving in for an RBU barrage. They are swimout, and have no transient.

MOSS's attract torpedoes like milkshakes attract boys to the yard.

They're less good on escorts. I keep trying to get them to chase a MOSS away from me but they don't seem to take the bait for very long. If an escort is charging you can fire a MOSS and it will probably attract a few salvos of depth charges but why not just fire a Mk48 instead?

I used one once ..I fired it at a task force they responded with 2 torpedoes which did follow the moss for about 1000 yds then they came after me...Ever see a Seawolf plow into the mud at 30 knots???:har::haha::wah:

I've found that the MOSS is a magnet for passive torpedoes, too. Activated a Mk 48 that was about the same range from a cavitating escort and a MOSS (plenty of bearing separation though) and the Mk 48 picked the MOSS every time, even when the torpedo was way shallower than the decoy.

In my opinion, the MOSS is one of the most underrated weapons in the game. Not only does it allow for safe escape after missile launches, it's also a godsave in situations where one is low on weapons.

I have found that it is a perfectly valid strategy to launch a MOSS at the enemy submarines, which then fire torpedoes that end up hitting their own ships. And not once was I at risk of being on the receiving end of fire, since they were too infatuated with the MOSS than with me.

It's also an okay last resort torpedo evasion tool, although you have to be under 20 knots to fire. It works really well when you're sitting on ultra quiet and suddenly a torpedo splashes overhead.

There is nothing as satisfying as killing an enemy submarine with its own torpedo.

I suggest launching them in combination with your other weapon attacks while setting up your evade or follow up attack strategy. The MOSS then becomes the first contact the enemy tries to retaliate against giving you more time to change position. Ideally, launch them near the vector of your first salvo and timed to be as far from your position as possible when your weapons are detected. I have watched subs I attacked turn to and ping the MOSS while my torps closed on them from behind.

I tend to use the MOSS purely as an evasion/decoy tactic when under attack or being tracked by ASW choppers.

If I'm under torp attack and I launch the moss at 90 degrees to my current heading and gain a little seperation. Once I dodge the fish breathing down my neck its 50/50 whether it takes the MOSS. I tend to just keep pointing torps towards my MOSS when I evade and they usually take the bait.

I also use it to evade after an attack if the ASW chopper is anywhere near me, in this case I launch at 180 to my desired course, rig for silent running and the chopper usually takes the bait.

Using MOSS
 
I have found the MOSS is a great way of diverting attention away from your sub.
The best way to use them is to fire one in the general direction of your target, sat 10 to 30 degrees off them (best fired from the torp tube that is on the far side of the target to minimise launch noise to them). Once the MOSS is away, change your depth by 400+ feet, turn your heading away by 20-30 degrees and rig ship for ultra quiet.
If there is a layer present, fire one above the layer and then change depth, heading etc., then go deep, do the same process and try to come up somewhere in between.
The MOSS is great into spooking subs and surface ships before they have fired at you, and they more often than not go after the MOSS, giving you some time to get a better solution on the targets as they increase speed/sound signature.
When combating incoming torps, a similar process applies. Try and launch the MOSS at the same depth as the incoming torp, dive/rise and turn away. If you can increase speed to put some distance between the incoming torp without making too much noise, say 10kts, this will increase your chances of survival.
Glad they included the MOSS in the game, just makes it more realistic and exciting.

I fired a moss once at a Krivak to distract him. He ran to evade, but the only problem was he made a circle and ran straight in my direction at flank speed lol :o

I had to shoot him in the bow. :ping:
