SH3 Failure!

I have been playing SH3 with GWX for several years - suddenly the game has stopped working. When I attempt to load the game, the opening videos work fine then when the progress bar comes up, it gets half way along and then CTD. It was loading fine last night and as far as I know, I haven't changed anything.

I have a clone of my hard drive (made a month ago) so I tried loading the game from that but the same thing happens.

I have tried re-installing the game (I have a fully paid for, starforce free, downloaded version from Ubisoft) and playing the 'vanilla' version with no mods and the same thing happens.

I am running Windows 10 home edition - the game has ben running fine until tonight. I do not have a permanent Internet connection - I usually run the game with the Internet disconnected but I did catch a recent Windows update.

Any advice?

Hi GJO
It would appear that your latest Windows update has caused your current problem.
Although you are running Windows 10 Home Edition there will be a version number.
The 3 most recent Windows 10 versions IIRC are 1607, Anniversary. Creator 1703.
Go to Start icon
Settings icon
Select System
Select About
This will show the version you are using.

There are number of things that you can try.
Make sure that you are running all applications as administrators.
You need to run Windows 10 in a compatibility mode usually Windows 7.
Another option is to make a change to your SH3.exe in properties by ticking the box 'Override High DPI scaling.'

You also need to check your driver version.
If your GPU is a Nvidia then open the Nvidia Control Panel\Help\System Information and you will see your driver version.

Windows 10 Creator version 1703 was recently updated by Microsoft to version 382.05 which is incompatible with Silent Hunter.
If you have this version then check out my tutorial at the top where you will find useful information and fixes.

Thanks for the help so far - my Windows version is 1607.
My graphics card is a built-in Intel HD 4000. It works fine with other games of the same era.

As the game stops or sticks half way along the loading bar and then crashes, I think there may be a file or program that the game needs that is no longer there. This could have been caused by Norton Security which recently 'quarantined' a couple of SH3 programs: JSMGE and GWX3_Stiebler4B_Addon_for_V16B1 because (it said) they contain a security risk 'Trojan.Gen.SMH.2' - I thought that I had successfully reversed the process but this may well still be the issue.

Have you tried running in compatibility mode?

I can only get SH3 to run on my Windows 10 machine if I run it in Windows 7 compatibility mode

Just an idea :hmmm:

EDIT
I see TheBerbster has already suggested this

Further investigation reveals that I had some corrupted files in my game directory/folder. The only solution to uninstall the whole lot - dfrag my HD and re-install SH3 and all my mods. Fortunately I have a near complete set of everything I need for this stored on a memory stick - and now to start all over again!

An odd thought just struck me - I have been playing this game for more than twice as long as the Battle of the Atlantic lasted in real life . . .
