- Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen will be officiating at the launch of the first of four new submarines for the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) in Germany next Monday (Feb 18), the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) has said.

All four Type 218SG submarines are manufactured by German defence contractor ThyssenKrupp Marine System.

The new submarines will replace the RSN's older ones, which are all second-hand refurbished vessels from Sweden.

The first two Type 218SG submarines are expected to be delivered from 2021. They will be equipped with improved capabilities such as modern combat systems and Air Independent Propulsion systems, and carry a wider range of mission payloads.

A closer look at the Type 218G: INVISIBLE, NOT INVINCIBLE

RADM Cheong said the Germans were also grateful that the RSN wanted to fully customise its submarine, pointing out that they gained “a lot of interesting insights”. “They said not many customers are so forthcoming in saying that this doesn’t work.”

To that end, RADM Cheong said the Type 218SG answers a lot of challenges.

“German submarines are like BMWs, so we are very glad we decided on this class of submarine,” he added. “This new build is designed for Singapore roads, tailored to our ergonomics, size and driving range. Even the horn sounds better.”

Major improvement is the fact that the type 218 also features an "X" rudder "which offers enhanced manoeuvrability in confined littoral waters, as opposed to the Type 214's cruciform rudder arrangement.

One for you and one for me

estimated cost is 1 billion dollars USD or we could make a deal for two submarines valued at €1.6 billion, including logistics and crew training.
