US flight planning

This thread to discuss flights from the US, where to arrive (Copenhagen vs Hamburg), where to connect in the US (Washington DC, Atlanta, Chicago, Newark).

Also, flight pricing, discounts, and suggestions.

So far, I have found the best price and shortest travel time using Expedia.

I have two plans for my trip to Copenhagen, both involve visiting U-995 in Laboe, Germany on WEDS Sept 16. I already know that Chad and I will be synching up as travel buddies, so if you are departing the US, you can post here with your ideas and if they match, we can group up.

PLAN A - To Copenhagen, then to Laboe and back to Copenhagen
I will be taking United from Houston to Washington DC on Mon 14-Sep. I can meet you in the DC airport and then catch the United 9404 departing Mon 14-Sep at 5:15 pm Washington DC out to Copenhagen, arriving Tues Sept 15 at 7:15 AM. A full day of rest and looking around Copenhagen on the 15th. Then on the morning of Weds the 16th, taking a train/car to Laboe, meeting up with German members and other Euros driving in, and then heading back to Copenhagen on the evening of Weds the 16th.

PLAN B - To Hamburg, then to Laboe, and on to Copenhagen. Then back to Hamburg after the meeting.
This plan involves either taking a train or renting a car from Hamburg to Laboe, then on to Copenhagen, or meeting up with a German or European member who is coming to meet us at Laboe and then attend the meeting. We can work those details out. Using Expedia, we can meet in Newark Airport and catch Continental flight 74 depating TUES SEPT 15 at 5:30 PM to Hamburg, arriving in Hamburg at 7:30 AM WEDS. Then we meet our German friends, or we can simply take the train. I will prepare a trip schedule with the train in advance, in case anything goes wrong, we will not be stranded. I always make plans for that.

Fly to Hamburg? Thats sounds like a cool idea. Is there a train we could take from Hamburg to Copenhagen?

Chad 02-28-09 06:18 PM

I barely got any sleep last night after talking with ya Neal

I'm excited to meet up with everyone again and to meet some of our European friends that didn't come last year :D :D

Neal,

I'm also looking at the Washington DC to Copenhagen direct flight (your Plan A), as I'm originating in DC.

I guess i should start planning. What kind of stuff does one need? Last time I traveled international, everything was taken care of for me.

passport (yes), do you need a visa to go there?, Cellphone:oops: :O:

hopefully getting picked up at the airport will work out better for me this time.:haha:

No need for a visa. But you might have to fill out customs declaration and visa waiver. Not sure on those, though. When we flew to Germany last fall, we didn't need to fill out anything for my Wife and my Stepdaughter.

As far as your cell phones goes: If it is GSM capable it will work. If it like most US cell phone it wont, because the US uses CDMA instead of GSM.

If I attend (still contemplation), I will probably fly from DC to Frankfurt or Dusseldorf (via Paris, London or Frankfurt), and take a cheap flight from there (if I am deciding against a rental); 58 Euros with Air Berlin RT from Dusseldorf - Copenhagen.

Well, my parents wouldn't be amused if I run around in Europe and don't stop by to say hello..

Updated my intentions to go with Plan A.

Cool. Maybe we could connect up when you arrive in DC.

I definitely think so. At this time, we have me, Chad, Nikimcbee, Mookie, Koondawg, Sailor Steve (did I miss anyone?) planning to make that flight with you and Ms. Subguru.

Chad 03-09-09 02:36 AM

So Neal, since you decided to go with Plan A, should I go ahead and purchase my tickets, or wait a bit longer?

I turned in my application for my passport in Friday, and they thought it would only take about a month. I'm hoping they're right :D

McBeck 03-09-09 03:08 AM

As for transportation from the airport to the hotel....the fastets as easiest would be to take the metro.

Denmark has a rather good public transportation sector, so you can take trains directly from the airport to central Copenhagen.

Depending on my time I will do my best to meet with groups of people in the airport and escort them to the hotels.

Let's wait a bit, we have time. I'm thinking to buy in May.
