Odd, have not heard much about this on the news

There is wisdom in having police that are directly handling prisoners not to have lethal weapons on their person. The idea is to have additional guards, who do have lethal weapons nearby, but not directly handing the prisoners.
I have had more than one police friend tell me that what ever weapon he or she is carrying is one that the bad guy can get a hold of. |

Many years ago there was one I remember, not fatal, but I recall that the female deputy escorting the pretrial detainees to court had such wide hips it seemed like it would be easy to snatch her weapon, handle sticking out like it was.
Usually in OR they are cuffed with hands behind them, also with leg cuffs, with the leg cuffs chained to the detainee behind them, however she must have gotten too close and somehow he snatched her gun. I don't know how he succeeded but I guess if you're that desperate you can find a way. He was caught by the end of the day. |
I've seen such things close up, and at least one occasion, a man stole a gun, but it was solved by being overpowered by colleagues.
