Hmmm...
I'm wondering, given the size of cameras/screens these days, if you can't utilize a tablet-type device attached to your periscope so that you can actually spin your periscope and still see the "screen". Just a thought. It might be impractical space-wise though.:hmmm:

Tomoose,
That is a very good idea! I think it would be possible to take a video feed out of one of the monitors to a small screen inside the periscope. You are right that currently there is not enough room for a 360 degree rotating periscope. However at some point in the future I hope to replace the Coroplast with a more sturdy and refined wood structure. At that point I've been wondering if I should go "all in" and design a standing Conning tower/ Control room. Then it would be possible to make room for a 360 degree periscope with your video monitor idea. Something like this - http://imageshack.com/a/img661/7117/pzyNkx.jpg A 360 degree rotating periscope would give a whole new meaning to performing a Stern Torpedo Attack. Very cool !!! Thanks, Tim |
That's really something! Better make it ultra realistic and heat that room up to about 95F (or more when you submerge). Turn on a humidifier, throw in some diesel fumes, rancid coffee, body odor, and the fragrance of a bilge.

dont forget just a touch of chorline gas from the batteries as a touch of sea water hits them

You're right, with one exception. If he's in an S-boat operating in the Aleutians he's going to need to turn the AC down to around 45 degrees and wear a coat. |
welcome aboard!

Periscope and screen
You would also have to somehow translate the movement of your physical periscope to the keys that turn the periscope on the screen (i.e. turning your physical periscope to the right would be the same as pressing the right-arrow key etc). One suggestion; TrackIR-type setup (sensor part on top of your monitor and the reflectors on your periscope i.e. the periscope takes the place of your head so to speak).

TrackIR is a great idea! Will try my old IR3 while on watch on the bridge for starters. |
