PC Requirement for Silent Hunter 5
 

I am in the process of rebuilding my PC will the following CPU work with Silent Hunter 5.

AMD Dual Core Althlon II X2 250 3.0GHz 2MB Socket AM3

Have just purchased the following Motherboard.
AMD M4A785TD-V EVO

i think that spek is a little under par to run sh5 heres the minimun system & recomended requirements for SH5 from ubisoft sh5 forums

With AMD so cheap right now you're shooting yourself in the foot with obsolete hardware if you don't go for at least a Phenom II X4 processor, that is if you can't afford Intel's i7 processors.

I have the exact same motherboard in two computers that you indicated you have purchased so I know you can slap a Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition on there and if you're even more adventurous ramp up the voltage.

The Motherboard AMD M4A785TD-V EVO (Windows 7 ready) seems to be able to take any of the following Processors Phenom II x2, x3, x4 ; Athlon II (used to be Athlon 64) x2, x3 x4.
Motherboard Memory is DDR3 PC3 6400 (800MHz), 8500(1066MHz), 10600 (1333MHz),

you still haven't mentioned RAM memory and video card ;)

Stev1, just built a new PC based on the AMD Phenom II 955 BE Rev C $159 dollars. With 8 gigs of ram and Win 7 Pro it will run SH5 maxed out in 1920 by 1080 rez.

I use the lowly Nvidia 9800GT.

The Management

Any processor is good enough. For games an AMD Phenom II X4 630 2.8 ghz is just as good as some Intel i7 965 monster. It's not like the late 90's early 2000's when you needed a new computer every couple of years and not just a new video card. Hell my 'ancient' Core2duo 6400 2.13 ghz, is still good enough for all games, the limitations of the most demanding being due to video card.

Check out most hardware reviews. The serious ones will show that processor difference only matters for 10 FPS or so when the systems have the same video card, unless it's an old game, but then why would you need a super computer to play an old game anyway?.

The one you picked is more than enough, but like others have said, AMD is very cheap, so just to be safe get a quad core AMD.

Memory is cheap these days but seems to go in cycles so get a lot of it if you can but don't go crazy. For games you won't need more than 4 gb for years, but get a bit more if you really want. People that argue for more RAM obviously don't know what they are talking about. Single task gaming doesn't need more than 3gb RAM as you can see here: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...de,2264-3.html. For symmetry's sake get 4 gb RAM and use the money saved for the video card.

For a videocard if you are budget conscious then a ATI 5750/5770 is best value.

I tested SH5 on my Core2duo 2.13ghz, 2gb RAM, ATI 4770, and could run it smoothly when there were no massive explosions from burning ships at 1600x1200 with every detail on maximum. With explosions it got to be a slideshow, so I had to lower AA and shadows for combat situations, but really that should be a guide as to the minimum you need to get the game mostly playable on max details.

You have an onboard video I see. It's fine for older games pre-2004, but no good for modern ones. Even the cheapest video card you can buy would be better!

For memory for the DDR3 variety, well they are similar in price and so you may as well get a 1333mhz version. As I've said 4 gb is more than enough, 6gb or 8gb is just pointless. By the time games will need it, the whole computer will be obsolete anyway.

Stay away from the Athlon2's - while they were good chips - they are old. Go with a Phenom II, and choose the 955 (or 965) if within your budget. The difference between the 2 is usually under $15,

The 965 can be had for as low as 169.99 - the 955 for 156.13 (prices do not include any shipping or tax).

Any of the Phenom II's will run it - but the higher clock speeds and cores will obviously run it better. if the 955 is your upper limit - and you haven't bought a vid card as yet (the 4200 is a low end graphics card and being "onboard" can cause issues - it has only 128Mb's dedicated and SH5 requires 512 Mbs. System memory MAY make up the difference - but it may not...) - I would have to ask what your willing to spend on the graphics before I could recommend a chip. The reason here is not that I am nosy - its because with the numbers we can figure out the right balance so that neither device "bottlenecks" you in games.

Regardless of which you choose - stick with a quad core. The boost from it long term as well as short makes it worth it. Without knowing your budget - a 925, 945 or the 955 are all solid choices. Avoid the 600 series - as they are all non-Phenom II's. Also - make sure you get the 95W version of the chip (as the 945 and above also come in 125W flavors which your board won't support). Difference between a 95W 925 and 925 is 20 bucks on Newegg, but both are solid. If I had a very limited budget, I would go with the 925 and use the extra to be added to the vid card purchase to make sure I don't get shorted on that side.
