Back to War (BALZ)

September 1941
Once again, our hero is preparing to spread terror in the Atlantic and create havoc among the enemies of the Reich.

###
Inside the narrow confines of U-321 the sailors trudged like ants. With all the traffic, Balz had trouble completing the MailAcozy order sheet. He wanted to make sure that the new lamb, Christmas tree, and penguin tea cozies would be waiting for his return.

It was difficult to concentrate. Every few seconds his thoughts were on Bernard, who was on deck supervising the loading of torpedoes.

His concentration was further disturbed by the stamping of a foot on deck and a loud voice, "Herr Kaleun, leutenant Krphs reporting for duty."
"Krphs? How do you spell that?"
"Krphs, Herr Kaleun."
"Spell it out slowly."
"Kkkkrrrppphhhsss, Herr Kaleun."
"How do you say grapes in German?"
"Grrrrpps, Herr Kaleun."
"Hmm," Balz said, "I asked for an officer who can write in lyrical prose about my heroic deeds on the high seas."
"I can sing while I write."
"Good, you will write during choir practice."
"Jhrrwhol, Herr Kaleun."
"Now go on deck and make sure Bernard places forward torpedoes in the forward tubes and stern torpedoes in the stern tubes. And the ones that donīt fit in the tubes you place on the racks."
"How does one know which torpedoes are forward torpedoes?"
Balz sighed. "The ones facing forward are forward torpdoes. Aft torpedoes face the opposite direction. Alles klaar?"
