Operation Monsoon- How do I survive air attacks?

Running about as a Type IXD2, which seems to take about four minutes to reach periscope depth. I have thus found that fighting it out on the surface tends to give a better survival rate, considering the usual rate of approach of a bomber and the long, long dive time. Any tips on how to keep my big, slow boat alive?

your boats crew's skill is deciding upon diving times etc. so with a diving time of 4 minutes to P depth i guess your crew is sleeping and you are doing everything by your self? :-?

try the following:
- give general quarters before diving (this puts all the crew in charge, and therefore speeds up the boats "skills")
- dont press "D" for dive, but "C" for Crashdive

cheers

P.S. i was very delighted of the IX/D2 and i think to remember a diving time of 30 seconds ...

Would you happen to know which compartments most affect diving time? I've been swapping in more competent crew members, but I seem to be a bit short on officers and petty officers considering the number of areas.

I absolutely agree with Morpeus.

Going to periscope depth isn't going to save you.
Crash dive as fast as you can when enemy plane is detected.
Fighting them risks your boat.

The quality of the command room personnel is a major factor.

I was just using time to periscope depth as a measurement, I try to go for 70-90 meters of depth. As for quality, obviously someone has been passing out booze to command staff.

'C' key. In a Type IX a dedicated crash dive takes me about 45 seconds to get underwater in Ops Monsun.

"Alaaaaaaaaarm!"

I must have SOMETHING wrong on my boat, that or the crew are busy picking their noses.

I think time compression could have something to do with too, the higher the time compression is. The closer to the boat the plane will be spotted, then less time to react. Do u use high time compression? I could be wrong....

As some have mentioned in this thread use D key or C key to dive. The dive angles is increased and the time is decreased. Only hit the P key for periscope depth if you are already under. All boats dived first then made way for periscope depth or whatever depth they wanted to obtain. :03:

PS. Besides that the IX is a big old girl and a nice target for the aircraft but she carrys a lot of torpedoes and fuel. If you play her with the abilities she has your patrols can be very successful.

Odd update, thankfully the great big thing is diving a bit quicker now, after antifreeze rations were eliminated. Crew training has been enhanced with a flipbook with pop up pages, so they can easily comprehend that closing things fast is good.

At the top of the forums you will see Downloads with a nice yellow NOW OPEN sign:03: All you goodies are there.

After some time playing, I have determined that the fault was with the very poor starting skills my crew had. After swapping out the antifreeze drinking idiots and slapping in those with 25+ skill, the boat began to dive somewhat more quickly.

Rockin Robbins 07-28-09 07:58 AM

Yes!!! Experience plus locking up the antifreeze works just about every time. The key is to survive long enough for the experience to help you.

Many rookie boats were sunk in the Bay of Biscay without having fired a single torpedo.
