Hello to All - Advice request for older games

Searching for some general advice and opinions.
Greetings from a new Subsim member. New to Subsim but Gray haired, Bald, overweight, opinionated, hard of hearing, and retired Cold War FBM’er.
Recently, I decided to test my technical skills and built a replacement desktop computer for another I had built 12 years earlier. Mission accomplished. I am proud to say it’s a screamer with an overclocked Intel I7-8700, Dual 1080 graphics boards, Multiple SSD’s and 64gb of ram running Windows 10 Pro 64 bit.
So here is my problem: Many years back I purchased and enjoyed Janes 688I and other sub simulator games of lesser skill and features. As time went on, and I started upgrading my computers, 688I just could not keep up. So, I lost interest in Sub simulation games until just now. Poking around the web I discovered this great website as well as Steam, and other related sub simulator game sites including a a whole bunch of neat U-Tube videos. My interest in Submarine gaming surfaced once again and I am starting to learn about patches and updates to older programs as well as newer games of sub sim developed in just the last few years. However, the patches to older games that I am reading about and would like to play once again seem centered only on the graphics of a game. I cannot find information on how well the game plays on modern faster computers with multicore processors, and clock speeds many times faster than those that where around when the original game was produced.
So far, I am interested in re-purchasing 688I (original long time jettisoned), Dangerous Waters, Fleet Command, Sub Command, and Sub Hunter etc. However, I have no interest in wasting money if such games behave oddly or poorly, even with the patches and updates running on a modern computer. If someone here in the forums already runs such older games on a Windows 10 machine, I would be most interested in learning how well they behave. What specific updates /files /modifications are recommended and perhaps suggestions to additional web sites with supplemental information. I am also interested in purchasing Cold Waters now which should run on Windows 10 Pro 64 bit. (agreed?) However, this game appears to be less technical and less complicated than 688I. (Yea, I love the complexity of TAM, Ship’s stations, total boat control, analyzing the sonar waterfalls and sound signature etc.)
Any other suggestions of Sub and or Naval games that may pique my interest would be most welcome. I will be watching for the release of UBoot.

Welcome aboard capt.al, I've recently had a new system built l7 W10 etc. and thus far have only tested with a couple of Call Of Duty titles without any problems but I do know some of the games you have mentioned 'present' problems regarding DirectX.

I'd suggest you post in the specific forum area of each game you are interested in for a better chance of receiving a reply from someone who has faced and hopefully overcome the problems you make reference to.

If you like Uboats and the Battle of Atlantic, I recommend you SH5 (not Steam version), patched with 1.2 update, and the mod The Wolfes of Steel. Easy install, great and realistic gameplay, constant updates and support, and hardcore in high realism seetings.

For Cold War and actual sub warfare, I recommend Dangerous Waters (similar in gameplay to 688i) or Cold Waters (more arcadish but not easy gameplay). For Dangerous Waters you will need the W8/W10 patch, for high resolution settings. Cold Waters works fine via Steam with W10, same with SH5 (not Steam).
