Frusrtated help please

So I have completed my 1st patrol searching the mid atlantic shipping lane and the following grids AL8483, AK9279 and BD3343 and found nothing.

Returned to base because I was running low on fuel and lost 1 point in reknown.

I'm now on my 2nd patrol and having successfully dropped the spy at Londonderry. I am once again in the shipping zones and day after day I have been searching on and off with the hydrophone at 30m, 35m and 45m..nothing!!

I have even run numerous scripts for searching and still found nothing. The last two night I left the scripts running on search for hours in real time and still nothing.

what am i doing wrong? am i searching in the wrong locations?

You are not doing anything wrong... it's the Das Boot syndrome! Lots of boredom followed by spontaneous acts of excitement. Good luck!

Cheers fair enough.

Is there any set length of time to patrol for?
so i do not suffer penalties for returning early or without tonnage.

Hi Dsd
No because you have completed your mission by dropping off your spy.
Unlike the patrol grids where you get 3 promotion points for completing all 3 the spy mission and commando missions are a bit of a let down as you only get 1 promotion point.
The plus side is you can now do whatever you want.
From where you are you have options to go North for example above Loch Ewe where you have AMC and troop ships. South to AM94 for example in that area and below. Stay around where you are as there are convoys coming in and out and also down from Loch Ewe to Liverpool.

IIRC you could lose 1 Career promotion point.

If you find yourself running out of fuel, make sure you don't overuse high speed settings. Most economical speed is (according to OFEV) 6 knots, so if you are running at 16 kts a lot you are cutting your range by half or more.

As it happens, I changed patrol grid and went 1000k off the coast of Ireland.

This was after checking the shipping sharts. No sooner as I arrived and started searching i came across a warship group.

Did a real qucik 90 and sent a salvo forward and managed to sink a 1100 ton warship.

Quick as a flash, I crashed dived and did and an about turn and rigged for silent running at 150m and escaped.. yippee.

Yes i have been checking with the engineer/navigator about max range against different speeds.
