SH4 corrupted save game problem

1 Attachment(s)
Hello everyone,

i came across a strange situation - i wouldn't tell anyone about that, but this happened few times since i started playing SH4 careers and i would like someone to explains me that.

Well, i started a patrol at Manila on 9 December 1941 with a Sargo class submarine. I received orders to patrol areas West and North of Luzon.

In one of those areas near the Western coast of Luzon i came across a Japanese Task Force consisted of more than dozen warships and transport ships. I managed to sunk one Nagara Maru using MK14 torpedoes and escaped the escorts taking damage from depth charges while my crew received minor wounds. Few hours later, on the surface when safe, with almost all repairs finished (beside slightly damaged 20 mm Oerlikon single AA gun) and with all crew members recovered from wounds i made a new savegame with unique name (!).

I left the game and i loaded that save later. When the savegame was loaded i received info about damage taken and casualties among my crew. Indeed, i got 3 men killed from the deck gun crew and few other wounded! There were no minefields, anti-sub nets and enemy coastal guns in that area.

I reloaded this save again as well as the game itself, but nothing changed. I made also a new save with another name after the one corrupted, but this didn't help.

Is there any way to fix that corrupted save or i need to start my patrol again? What's going on? Is there possible, that the Time Compression option caused this bug, since i used it during the escorts depth charge attacks (TC x 8) and shortly after they broke out the attack (TC x 32)?

Thank You in advance for help! This is really annoying.

Jakub

EDIT: I edited the ActiveUserPlayer.upc file inside the E:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Moje dokumenty\SH4\data\cfg\SaveGames\00000006 folder to reset the damage values to 0.000000 (for equipment, hull and crew members), but those changes are not visible in game. This is the first save that i had made after i escaped the escorts. Maybe i need to edit another file?

I also disabled all my mods in JGSME, started a stock SH4 then left the game and enabled the same mod list again. This didn't help to resolve the problem.

Below i posted the JGSME enabled mod list, that i used when i made this problematic save - i don't know if this makes any difference.

I have had more than my fair share of corrupted saves and never found a way to fix them. I was once told that if a save is made whilst underwater it can corrupt easily. But it has happened, but not many times. :wah:

surely its better to start a patrol again, that a whole career??

Hello Red Devil,

the problem is, that i actually made that problematic save while surfaced.

Indeed, i started again this particular patrol, since i didn't find a way to fix that savegame.

You might have a slight case of "Mod Soup", but not of the Ralles variety. One thing to remember about Bleiente's mod is that it does bring with it a lot of what you put into your game prior to loading his "Ralles ModPack". Read Bleiente's ReadMe stuff for his mod, and then leave out the other stuff you've got in the list. What you load after his ModPack shouldn't affect things too much.

When you Save the game and then reload that Save later, it's almost like the SH4 game has to run through the scenario you were in at the Save time frame, all over again, and will re-do the "roll of the dice" for each aspect of the Save. It can be very frustrating when it happens, and makes one wonder as to which aspect of the game it is that has the issue. Is it the save? the restore? the format of the files? what the player does to the game prior to the save? Time Compression? etc.

Hello propbeanie,

well i actually deleted this corrupted save a while ago, but i will be more "vigilant" in future.

As far as i know the enabled mods from my list should work together without problems.

All mods enabled prior to the "2.0 Ralles ModPack for TMO_RSRDC_OTC" mod are compatible with it - at least the mod's readme said that, lol.

propbeanie 10-17-17 10:49 AM

Yes, they're compatible, but some of them are in Ralles ModPack is all I was saying. Just be sure you're installing in the proper order that Bleiente says to. :salute:

Well, according to Bleiente instructions i enabled the mods in proper order.

"The correct sequence via JSGME would be as follows:

1. TriggerMaru_Overhaul_2-5
(with or without the optional modes)
1a Real Environment RSRDC_TMO by Kriller + Caustic
2. RSRDC_TMO_V502
(and patch)
3. 1.5_Optical Targeting Correction 031312 for RSRDCv502
3a 1.5_OTC_Realistic Scopes (or Aspect Ratio) RSRDCv502
3b 1.5_OTC_Tokko's Revenge for RSRDCv502 (better aircraft and improved AI)
4. Ralles ModPack for TMO_RSRDC_OTC"

I don't have only the 3b point from the above list (1.5_OTC_Tokko's Revenge for RSRDCv502 mod).

Oh... I don't like Tokko in Bleiente's version anyway... I die ~way~ too soon... :har:

So you're probably fine with the mods, and you've just experienced one of those "unknown" situations with your save game. I saved the game years ago just after a very intense depth charging where they broke my batteries, and I had to surface, since I'd lost most of my propulsion, ~and~ the boat was filling with poison gas. Once on the surface, I was in fog and it was raining. I saved the game and came back the next day. When I loaded the save, the skies were perfectly clear, and the DD's that had given me a depth charged drubbing, now gave me an intense 5" shell pounding... I died... I'm thinking that was v1.4 way back when. :hmmm:

Like kimuraijn suggests, when saving, name your save, and don't overwrite previous saves, and that minimizes the chances of encountering those issues. Some folks never have issues, while others have never-ending troubles. The computer's and game's settings probably come into play some. Activating mods, and then loading saves from before the mod can do what I call "cross-contaminate" your game, and you may never know it happened until you have this bad "restore" issue.

Well, this particular corrupted savegame had a unique name and i didn't load this savegame after activating or deactivating mods. I posted earlier my JGSME enabled mod list at the time when i saved the patrol.

Red Devil 10-18-17 07:38 AM

deja vu!!! Last night had a corrupted save. I ended up 'leaving port' again.

A Soviet Fanboi 05-13-21 08:01 AM

It happened to me once too,. After loading a save game, I got a hull damage of 24 without any reason. I simply exited and reloaded the save and it worked

Red Devil 05-14-21 10:10 AM

one of the most common things on a load save is a warning of damage suffered, and keeps repeating ever few seconds. I close the game, reload, same save, and its gone.

Get them all the time even with vanilla and with mods. Haven't figured out a way to recover a bad save, save often is my advice.
