Los Angeles tail/rudder fin configuration?

One thing I don't get.

In The Hunt for Red October, the USS Dallas, which is a FLT I boat, has a tail section that looks like what Revell is selling.

But in Cold Waters, it looks like this:

Some other model makers are offering the same thing, without the extra vertical stabs on the tail fin:

In cold waters, the only boat that has this tail config is the Ohio class if you install the extra boats mod.

So who is right? And if the Los Angeles had that tail config, why did they change it?

688's never had them. They were added to the Sturgeons to offset the bigger sail fitted to that class.

Yes, I've also seen accounts that they had PUFFS arrays mounted on there but not really sure of that. Many of the later Laffayette and Benjamin Franklin class also had similar end plates.

So Revell and the movie had it wrong then?

Yes.
