This article talks about the 5th generation subs we have in development. They are commonolised subs, using common systems and largerly common hull between a multirole SSN and an SSGN.

Russia's New Nuclear Submarines to Target U.S. Aircraft Carriers

Quote:

Russia is designing “carrier killer” nuclear submarines, local media is reporting.

According to reports in The Moscow Times and Pravda, among others, Anatoly Shlemov, the head of the state-owned United Shipbuilding Corporation's state defense order department, recently said that Russia will build two-classes of fifth-generation submarines as part of Vladimir Putin’s military modernization plan.

The first of these submarines will be designed to intercept strategic submarines whereas the other class will be built to target large surface vessels, principally aircraft carriers. “Though the designs have not yet been named, one will be classified as an ‘underwater interceptor’ and the other an ‘aircraft carrier killer,’” The Moscow Times paraphrased Shlemov as saying.

Yea, using Kilo image to depict 5th gen submarines was a bad plan.

Btw, how many DDX class ships are going to be built?

Was 30; then ten; now three...Apparently not all the technologies are 'mature':timeout: Seems to me we're already beat out on this though; I saw this stunning vessel anchored in San Francisco and posted in 'Favorite ships" Owned by Andrey and Aleksandra Melnichenko, Russian billionaire and built in Kiel for $300,000,000.:o We should outsource to Blohm + Voss-might be cheaper-although 3 swimming pools and two tenders at $1,000,000 apiece i$ $teep.http://www.superyachts.com/motor-yacht-2061/a.htm https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...ent_2012_3.jpg http://www.superyachts.com/syv2/asse...site/blank.gifhttp://www.superyachts.com/syv2/asse...site/blank.gifhttp://www.superyachts.com/syv2/asse...site/blank.gif

With four under construction
seven on order
twelve planned

leaves these new submarines
coming in around 2027

more like 2030 as slow as they have been
one more accident would slow that time frame down

Not anyone wants to see an accident

I wonder what the men, the crew of officers and men
think when they are out there on patrol.

Is it a hide and seek war mentality for all of the submarine navies of the world?

ikalugin 07-07-15 03:12 PM

Current situation is:
- 3 in service.
- 3 in production.
- 2 more to be layed down this year.

My guess is that we would get atleast 6 Boreis by 2020, which would sort of fill out the minimal requirement we have for SSBNs and would allow scrapping Delta IIIs and maybe some Delta IVs. 8 subs by 2020 is what we want to have, if it is expanded to 12 by 2025 (ie on the lines of Delta IIIs/IVs numbers) then we are golden.

My instinct tells me putin will probably opt for the full 12 as he wont want to be too far behind the states, the one project I am looking forward to is the new destroyer project, I hope it does bear fruit in the coming years as we havn't got past the planning stages yet.
