Any SH4 prime here??

Ahoy me mateys!

I wonder how many of you have reached the climax of proficiency in SH4. In sinking every ship with but torpedoes...

In the ability to call angle on bow without plot, merely observing the target through periscope?, in the ability to call range without plot. In the ability to flick to the desired manual page and positively ID a target in moderate, and less favourable weather conditions?

In the ability to recall stock (or mods (for you Armistead)) ship length values?

Prime is a true skipper behind this screen. Are you?

About me: I'm still a rookie, even after all those ships, I can't make do without the regular plot.. This should keep things interesting to all you hardcore submariners out there.

What? No joy? Nobody??? C'mon!!!

Ah yea, were here, just lurking under the surface, waiting for our next vict^H^H^H^H post to come by. :D

Currently, I'm playing Fall Of The Rising Sun. In that game I'm playing with only outside cams on (I like the eye candy).

Playing the German's this time on my Unterseaboote 199. On second patrol now. Just sank a T3 tanker and a Liberty Cargo. Only three torps expended. I tend to not play by the exact rules suggested we play by. For in my case, I use the cannon when possible. I can stay out on patrol longer if I preserve my fish.

I don't use the O'Kane methods or anything else. I use the old fashioned TDC as it was intended. I let the computer calculate the course for the torpedoes. I've gotten pretty good at finding the angle on the bow. So I don't need any weird targeting schemes anymore. I tend to use the electric variants because I don't like the bubbles from gas torpedoes. Since I'm pretty much shooting from close range (< 2000 meters), I don't need the gas anyway. I tend to intentionally target the propulsion systems do stop the target. I try to hit each target to stop them and come back to finish the job after all targets have been disabled. This saves the fish used and I can be picky about where I want to shoot from.

Also because the German TDC has no position keeper I use their tracking torpedoes to knock the props off.

If the convoy is escorted, well, things get a little dicey. I take my target out and then hide. I try not to go after escorts but have been known to do a down the throat shot or two before, if they piss me off enough.

I tend to stay in deep water if the option allows it. I hate fighting in shallow water. If the convoy is escorted and is in shallow water I may track it till it crosses some deep water somewhere, then make the kill.

A good skipper makes full use of the available tools and environment available. I've done a few sonar only kills but the difficulty is much and many times the target can get away if you are not in the right spot at the beginning of the track. So I tend not to prefer such. But during storms and heavy fog, it sometimes can't be avoided. Most times I'll just track and get behind the target. Then shoot his props out from behind and then take my time to finish it off. Radar helps immensely here as you can lose your target in the storm if it stops completely from sonar only.

Also, I no longer worry about saving fuel just to get max efficiency unless the mission were to require it. I'll run the boat at full and when radar signals are found or planes spotted, I dive and stay down about 1.5 or so hours. Then I might come back up on the surface to run if the water is calm. It doesn't bother me any more to just ride the rest of the day out underwater. I usually don't run my batteries down past 50% though.

Well, that's enough chatter.

XO, make your depth 40 meters. All ahead slow.

I can ID every ship without the book before hitting the ID button, but TMO has an automatic ID, so you don't have to look in the book. I know 90% of lengths, but that was playing so long timing types through the crosshair. The rest, good guessing at times when I must, but why guess when you can get info by other methods.

Probably forgot a lot, doubt I've played 3 times in the last several months, but did spend some hours trying to mod.

for some bizarre reason, solo feels he must post questions of minimal significance to generate a discussion. Very strange. Others post questions when they need a solution to a specific problem.

It has nothing to do with whether I like you. I am pointing out that some of your posts are ridiculous in my opinion.

then refrain from answering them. You can see my name as OP. Simple.

I've seen much worse questions, probably asked a few in my day:salute:

I rather enjoy these posts because I can get a feel for what others are doing and hear some of their experiences. I've picked up a great deal of information from such posts and I also like the general feel of "community" it seems to generate for me. Just my opinion mind you. What I consider to be a post that challenges my tolerance in somehing akin to "I hate this stupid SH4 because it crashes to desktop every time I start a patrol. I run TMO2 and RFB with FOTRS."

Its a great community and I'm thrilled to be a part of it.

I don't think anything is particularly irrelevant in the context of learning the "game". I play simply, use my crew (another way of saying I don't play 100% manual) and still I find myself in incredible situations completely unexpected. Think I can't miss with auto-aim?? DID, with two fish. Tanker saw'em and turned. Had to battle surface and play with the deck gun again, then had an air patrol coming to check things out halfway through the battle making a crash dive necessary.
It's a good game...I respect all of the Skippers on this forum and we are all different with our own ways of playing and our opinions. I would hope that no one would be discouraged from saying what they feel on this forum and always keep in mind that the real respect goes to the Boys that sailed these things back in WW2.
Solo, you have a unique style of posting and I hope you always do so.
D40 out, and Good Hunting :salute:
