working in the SH5 3d world

Ever since subsims have existed, we players have gotten used to obtaining vital info from 2d screens or icons. It has become second nature to check the little dials or numbers around the screen to see the condition of our sub.

Recently, playing with TDW's UI mod, I set the options so all icons disappear when not in use. It was a bit unnerving at first, but then I realized I could probably read much of the same info from the 3d dials around the boat. Sure enough:

1. Helmsman station - engine telegraph, ship heading, rudder angle:

2. planesman station - Depth meter, dive plane angle, engine RPM:

3. navigator station: clock with current game time:

You can also find repeater dials in the conning tower, sonar room and bridge. After a while it becomes second nature and much more immersive to obtain the info from the 3d world rather than from 2d icons.

the best would be like in SH4 where you could click the dials to order new speed/depth ect.(this was a mod someone made i believe)

I need to give "hide when not in use" UI elements another go, i had tried it with 0second hide delay, which i dont recommend.

Thanks Trevally, I have steelviking's mod installed, but had not noticed the additional dials for co2, compressed air, fuel, etc.

Yes, there was some great work done by those guys:yep:

I still wander about my boat just looking dials for info.
Standing in front of the engine electrical boards and change speed - fantasic work they did:up:

And all this was done at a time when "SH5 and UBI are rubbish" threads were a daily occurrence.
Now thankfully they only pop up now and again.

This is the main reason why I absolutely hate any UI that mod the stock one and fill it with dials and buttons. We got every info we need on the sub, all you gotta do is just to move a bit and read the data. Combine this with keybindings and voice command and there is no more need for any UI on the screen. But old habits are too strong to understand such a simple concept.

Still waiting for a UI that have nothing on screen than a chatbox :/

Fun to read this thread as a new player. I haven't played much yet, but I really like the idea of immersion, and what better way than getting it directly from your boat! :)

Edward Tufte, for those of you familiar with him, would really like this approach. After all, any experience is about the content, not the interface to that content. The more the interface can be removed, the more the content will stand or fall on its own merits.

Magnum fails to realize that all the UI stuff can be hidden in my UIs mod. It only appears when you mouse into the area and then after a time delay it disappears again. Best of both worlds :yeah:

This is the way I enjoy the game.
When im walking around being captain, my UI is gone.
Then with a flick of the mouse, its back so I can bark out the commands:up:

This!

SH is maybe the most conservative game ever. Never saw such a high amount of demands for "more dials and stuff on my screen" like here. Lucky me, there is also few mod that help those who are addicted to key binds and voice command play style.

Great thread. If i had more time to devote to this game i would install the "real navigation" mod, use the whiz wheel & raobf targeting wheel. How much more "real" could you get it?

I removed the torpedo icons from the maps in test version 7 of v6.4.0 of the UIs mod. This applies to real navigation only. Really ups the realism because you have no idea where your torpedoes are. All you can do is sit and stare at the clock for when they are supposed to hit :DL

Very cool.

I actually took a Celestial Nav course (think "homeschool") when i was a bosun'mate in the USCG. It was cool, but i admit i never got that far into it and it's been 13 years now...
