Gibraltar dont do it !!

Checking in..

The last patrol lost my boat in operation drumbeat after I sank a Panamanian tanker, Escorted by a VW Destroyer, with the same flag I had 26 kills on that ongoing patrol with the unlimited supplies. this is with a 95% play setting, I don't know why previous after getting slammed off the Spanish coast with a hunter-killer Group of 3 VW Destroyers and the battery down too 25 %, was I able to shake off the attack's but, I survived after 48 hours of ongoing depth charge attacks. after that, I was able to move my boat to the Cuban coast only to find these two ships moving west. I shot the tanker and dived too 80 meter's . for some reason after 6 hours of depth charging. Several depth charges hit my aft torpedo room causing massive flooding, the depth was only 226 meters, the boat went stern downward's and bottomed out at that depth. seems In TWOS, that are no chances of the boat recovering. the boat kept hitting the ocean floor until my hull was completely destroyed- with that crew, I lost all prestige and all training points.

. Restarted a new campaign with the home base at La Spezia, which once again was a tanker choke off the Cuban coast. to get to the designated patrol area. I would have to pass through Gibraltar. My Instinct was not to accept this mission, which I was correct. A hunter-killer group of 3 patrol boats and1 Swan, 1 VW.manged to find my boat. I was just south of the English base hugging the Spanish coast. that group managed to hit my boat with a plethora of depth charges, hitting my boat in the forward torpedo room causing my boat to dive rapidly and sink. My advice Stay in the MED at 95% settings, Imagine this.. this was at night that I attempted to pass through the strait of Gibraltar, silent running, speed 2 knots .seems those little patrol boat has the asdac, Sonor, which the whole group works together to kill your boat
quickly .. Salute My fellow sub simmers's

Captain AJ!

I tried Gibralter once. Had to go there after having my base moved to LaSpezia. Hugged the African coast, at night and as fate would have it drew a medium fog weather situation in the spring of '41. Got through by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin. We encountered a task force, just on the med side of Gibralter. Sank a Queen Elizabeth battleship, and paid for that with 36 hours of intense depth charging. The Tommies were NOT happy with us. Thought we were goners for sure. Around 1 pm the following day, a group of Stukas attacked the escorts, and caused enough distraction we were able to slip away. Whew. Gibralter is not for the faint of heart. The fog and darkness allowed us to travel topside for around 50% of the journey. As tough as it was, I can see how light fog, or no fog, or later in the war when engine noise is detectable topside would make the passage extremely perilous.

That’s the SH5 (TWOS) problem number one in my opinion.

Because of that, i avoid any destroyer at all cost because at first hit i’m Dead with no way to repair anything…

Little thing to do to limit this issue is to deactivate the collateral damage patches in TDW patcher. No more crazy damages everywhere then…
But seems not really enough to me.
I had to tune down the destroyers abilities to spot you 180m depth at 1 knot or even stopped right away...

The goal was not to cheat so I will never die, but to find an acceptable balance for gameplay. Because unlike SH3, SH5 damages are completely uncontrollable to me.

Furthermore, when inside flooding, smoke and sparks in command room game becomes unplayable because of stuttering. Very hard to click anything, even on low graphical settings.

Thanks for the info Fifi. Could you pass on the info on how to tune down the destroyers abilities a bit, and what setting you settled on to get better balance as well? I will look for the collateral damages settings in TDW patcher next time I play. Not being able to lie on the bottom is a bummer since it could likely shadow you from ASDIC. Im sure Vecko likely has everything set up to maximize gameplay with the limitations which the game engine imposes.

So you need to deactivate Collateral damage (and all dependencies) as well as Zone (box) AP damage when zone (box) damaged...in shcollisions patch.

Then in data/script/AI/init.aix you can fine tune the non merchants behavior (hence destroyers)
I have only changed hydrophone difficulty min to 0.50 and max to 0.70
And sonar difficulty min to 0.50 and max to 0.80
Keep the rest unchanged...

Best is to create a Jsgme mod with the correct path like above, for this init.aix so you keep unchanged original TWOS...and put it in your TWOS parts folder.
Or save the original TWOS init.aix somewhere for later backup if needed.

You can test it with single mission TDW FX update test, or any other single mission where you have destroyers chasing you.
If my settings seems too easy or to hard to you, you can change them of course to your liking ...

Have fun :salute:

Great Information FIFI will certainly make the changes, Also I agree once the control room is being flooded with all the effects your abilities to manage the sub becomes greatly reduced, :Kaleun_Salute:

You’re welcome :salute:

For the command room stuttering problem when damaged, i wish Vecko could read those lines and tell me what i could deactivate (or even delete) to get only the flooding animation... but no smoke or sparks that are too heavy for my computer.

Click on it and it will open the patch dependency.
Then double click on each patch dependency and put it on false.
If done correctly the Collateral Damage patch will turn red.
Repeat for all needed.

Don’t forget to deactivate the Zone AP (box) or it will give you CTD when ennemy encounter!

skin-nl 01-17-19 02:37 PM

The init.aix file you can open with notepad

The shcollisions_patch.s5p you can open it with the generic patcher.
