Looks like a landing ship.

I don't care how often they tell us those things are literally warships, they're not. :03:

Based on commercial ferry design

ikalugin 03-01-19 02:10 PM

Won't this compromise it's combat survivability?

Kapitan 03-01-19 02:15 PM

Not really i was on board a similar type of vessel in the gulf in 2003 you will likely find she will be escorted as well but no shouldn't do anything to compromise her.

HMS Ocean was similar based on a commercial design

ikalugin 03-01-19 02:33 PM

I am not sure it is wise to just assume that escorts can provide perfect protection. I seem to recall that KSA learned it the hard way.

Its more a coalition thing we was escorted into Umm Qasr near Basra by two RN mine warfare ships, these vessels will linger off shore and deploy they wont get close in like what we did.

The St Malo agreement is very broad so there's a lot of availability but something is better than nothing and i would assume these ships will have point defense weapons

With modern profilation of AShMs I do not see how you can deploy your amphibs from a safe distance.

Basically my point is that Amphib ships should be viewed as and built as combat ships, with all the relevant survivability measures. And knowing the RN track record of provided for but not fitted with i am not sure that they would get adequate point defenses.
Especially considering the potential loss of life if something goes wrong.

Kapitan 03-01-19 03:38 PM

But she is not going to be an amphib ship in the true sense her role will be to deploy assault teams in RHIB's not like HMS Albion or Bulwark or the Bay class which are traditional LPD's or Ocean which was a LPH

ikalugin 03-01-19 03:41 PM

So pure anti piracy?

Kapitan 03-01-19 03:55 PM

not really but it could do that role this will also be along coast lines something similar to the Iraq invasion

The issue is that currently the AShM threat is more profilate and significant than in 2003.

And you can't really do landing operations from a stand off distance, especially not in tight areas such as the Persian Gulf.

Somebody must have avoided a great temptation by not placing shark's teeth on that bow. :D

At present the role would be more counter terrorism and at present it is very unlikely that any group will be able to fund high end ASM's counter piracy humanitarian response and covert operations are what this ship is about don't confuse it with an amphibious assault ship its not really designed for that role.
