Regarding US & GER skipper WWII hats

I've noticed that some has the visor sewed/glued with those golden "leaves".

What is the difference in rank by wearing with or without it?

tks

^SNIPERS! :O: ALSO KNOWN AS 'SCRAMBLED EGGS' OR 'EMBELLISHMENTS' CUSTOMARILY NOT WORN CLOSE TO THE FRONT....MAKES IT TOO EASY FOR THIS GUY: MAJOR H. HESKETH-PRICHARD, D.S.O., M.C. http://www.allworldwars.com/Sniping%20in%20France%20by%20Major%20Hesketh-Prichard.html

The ideal army, could I clothe it, would wear a very curious shape of cap, with certainly an uneven outline.
But I do not need to labour this point. You have only to look at the photographs contained in this book to see what a terrible handicap a definite outline is.

Snipers is the answer for the Army and they quit wearing the combination cover when helmets became a necessity. As for the USN, they get the oak leaves on their covers at O-5. Not sure about the KM.

tks all. After some reading the O-5 rank (Commander) has the eggs!

I saw some pics where WWII sub skippers did not have those. Probably they did not have the time to put it while at sea or just did not bother at all?

Or they were an O-4, Lieutenant Commander. Wasn't uncommon for an O-4 to be a CO later in the war.
