Repetitious Missions/Ships

I noticed recently that on patrol I had 2 freighters, then sailed on and found a convoy, then a task force, used up torps and went home. Came out again, 2 freighters in same location so deliberately went to convoy location, and there it was same convoy, same ships, same direction. So sank 2 and went to task force, yep, there it is!! I know SH4 (with TMO and RSRDC) throws up shipping at random, but what are the odds on two consecutive scenes.

Actually, rather high... If you look at the Random Generated Groups in the MIS file with a text editor, you'll see them spread before you in text instead of graphics, and you can look at the percentage of chance there is that they'll generate. If using the Mission Editor, you have to do multiple clicks, and stand a chance of messing things up with an inadvertent click. When starting a new time period with the files, such as the beginning of a career, the files are all "in sync" and you will often see repeats, especially if you sail to the same place, and the groups are set to spawn every 24 hours at say 70%...

Thanks, another 'repetitive' is a glut of fishing boats. Previous night and last night, one patrol near coral sea I sank over 20 fishing boats (4 by ramming to do something different) before I gave up and ignored them they were everywhere!!! Sometimes I can do a whole career and not see a single task force or tanker.

Definitely a lot of repetition in the game, in spite of RGG (Random Generated Groups) and the percentages. Some of the issue lies with the way the game does "random". If something is set to 70%, that would be 7 out of 10 times, it will happen. With the game, it seems it does something 7 times, and then quits for 3, then does it again for 7 times, instead of it being more variable. Just the nature of the beast and the way a computer generates, or "seeds" something. Some of the modern games use better routines for that, but the SH series is based on probably at least 15 year old tech.

One way to alleviate some of that "behavior" would be to have 3 separate RGG representing the same boat, each set to a lower incidence of spawning. Only problem with that is then you might have situations where you would have 3 groups occupying the space of one... So a person would have to really work each individual file over heavily, and we're talking of thousands of RGG in some of those files, with 12 files for each of 6 time segments, not counting the "Battle" files, etc., and we're talking a good chunk of someone's time... :o - so sometimes, you have to leave normal sensibilities behind, and just ram a few more fishing vessels... :har: - and really, when you think about it, for the fishing boats, a guy lives in a certain house in a certain town, runs a certain boat for his livelihood, and probably has a habit of where he's going to go fishing everyday, so it's not out of the realm of possibility to see the same boat in the same place everyday... btw, when you shoot at those fishing boats, they do call in the incident, and you stand a good chance of a flyboy or DD, if they're close enough, to come pay you a visit, and try to drop some boom on you...

I think the answer is 'don't mess with the afflicted'. I have played SH4 with RSRDC and TMO for so long I think its time for a change. I am getting bored with repetitiion.

Well then, in that case, let me take this opportunity for a shameless plug - Give Fall of the Rising Sun Ultimate a shot, and see if you like it...

FOTRS Ultimate Project - First Page

It is based on TMO v1.7 from way back when, but heavily modified over the years in the regular releases of Fall of the Rising Sun. We're currently in Beta v0.63, and hope to have another version out shortly, with a regular release hopefully not too far behind. There is still repetition, but we do have most all of the AOTD_MadMax Team's vessels and planes in it, plus a few extras. We are still working on some AI issues, and trying to implement a few new features. Just do a parallel install of SH4 with MultiSH4, and put FotRSU in that, and leave your TMO / RSRDC alone, for that "just-in-case".

I'm also reasonably sure that if Bleiente stopped by here, he'd say "Try mine!", and his version of TMO / RSRDC is called "Ralles RealModPack for TMO_RSRDC_OTC", and it is really nice also, though it is very similar to what you have.

I am on my 9th patrol with USS Threhser SS-200, Reading historical books . I have read that some patrols were routine and had long bouts of no sightings of ships. however being assigned to your patrol area does not mean that you will get ships or targets -- you are the simulated skipper of your boat , and you are in command of what your boat will do . I had a an assigned area of Leyte Gulf to drop of comandos , after I left that area I went west and manged to sink more ships I ended up just outside Rabaul Harbor and for two days I manged to sink 5 merchants and two Destroyer escorts -- Left the Bismark Sea and went to brisbane to re- arm and refuel . than was ordered to Guadalcanal to do life gaurd duty . after 4 days of endless patrolling and no air downed airman - I decided to go back up the slot and station my boat outside of Rabaul. The objective was not completed but the action is in the Bismark sea - I will return and complete that objective once I get more tonnage under my belt. Point being made is that you are the skipper of your boat . changing Mods will not help that . I am using FOTRS as my mod - I hope this encoureges you -- happy hunting skipper !! :)

on thing to remember,a cheat if you like. You do not have to follow mission parameters - I dont a lot and never been penalised.
