Open Source "Red Storm Rising" ?
 
Hi,

I do not know, if other people think the same way, but I still enjoy Red Storm Rising more than Dangerous Waters (regarding playing subs), because:

- random mission generator and even a big campaign with great atmosphere !
- enemy AI is still better: destroyers and other ships know the formation drills and aggressively hunt you

Of course this sim has also its shortcoming, mostly regarding the modeling of sonars and some weapons

A sim which would address these problems and also enhance it by providing to play more subs (eg. diesel) would be my all time-favorite :)

What do you think? Would you like such a sim?

Hi Hawk

Dangerous Waters have also a great and powerful mission editor. You can create your own missions and campaigns in DW.

I hope Mike continuing the work on his Cold War Simulator.

I second that :)

RSR is a very round down game. A very complete game that features almost everything you could wish. It is also easy to play but yet offer challenges. A truly timeless game. Yes I still play it.

Hi Marko,

yes, I know the DW mission editor pretty good, even created some doctrine scripts.

DW is good in simulating the different 'workplaces' like sonar/TMA but it lacks the 'captain view' due to its limited crew AI and the absence of a generic (non-scripted) AI in general.

The strength of RSR is the atmosphere, enemy AI and the dynamic campaign.

In contradiction to the existing indie approaches I would omit a 3D engine completely (at least for the first version) and just focus on the topics to simulate a 'captain's view' in a cold war environment. But that's just my personal view...

Count me in as someone (a constant lurker!) who still plays and enjoys RSR as one of the classic sims I hope will never disappear entirely. And that someday someone might update more for compatability and minor cosmetic changes than anything else.

Sounds good, count me in!!! But, an 3D engine is very important for me.

Of course, and nuclear submarines in a cold war sim. ;)

Is this the version that came out from Microprose for the C64, Amiga and then PC? Or is there another open source version I am not aware of?

I have to admit I never really thought of or look at RSR as a simulation like you would think... I always looked at it as a linear story that ended by winning or loosing..

However I DO still play it on the Amiga because it definitely is and was one of the top games of the era... I also play Megafortress on the Amiga as well as its expansions.... but that game is so dam hard...

:rock: great game, it was my first experience with nuclear boats and modern naval war.


i still remember the trick of go to periscope depth , engage the radar and see where is the enemy submarine when launch a sealance type torpedo. :D

My favorite tactic was to launch 4 or 5 wire guided torps out in front of the formation and then turn them into the targets and have them go active. Then watch as they pointlessly attack an empty area of the sea while I slink away behind them. Sometimes even getting a second volley as the big targets evade right into my path.
