Subcomand + XP + 3D = Lock Up? Help Please

Just got a copy of Subcommand from eBay.

Installed it and then patched to v1.08.

Seems to run fine in 640 x 480.

When I go to options I am able to navigate everything just fine.

When I click on 3D it locks up. No Alt-Tab out. No Task Manager with Cntrl-Alt-Del. I have to shut off the power.

I want to increase the screen resolution to 1024 x 768.

I have an AMD 3000+ with 1 Gig Ram, Win XP Home SP2 and an Nivda FX 5500 with the most recent drivers.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Marc

Try to roll back the video driver and also...what is your DirectX version?

9.0c

Nvidia says I can not roll back the drivers because none were saved. Odd, since I just installed the updated drivers around Christmas. I guess I could uninstall the drivers and use the disk that came with the video card...

Oh, and I mis-typed above.

I can get into the shell and move arround the selection screens, pick a mission etc., but once I try to start the game it freezes up just like it does when I try to select 3D from the options menu.

I have tried pre-setting different resolutions and refresh rates, but no luck so far.

I might suggest you posting your troubles here also...

Uninstall the new driver and then install the cd version. Attempt to play the game here. Also, enable error reporting by going to the systems applet in control panel, then clicking on the advanced tab. On the bottom is "error reporting" and select operating system and program. I might suggest you clicking on the program list to the right and select Sub Command. This also works in Dangerous Waters if you have it.

Ok....uninstalled all my Nvida drivers (was version 8.?) and reinstalled the original drivers that came with the card (version 4.3).

Ran SC and tried to access the 3D menu in the options screen and it locked up again.

I guess I will uninstall SC and resinstall it and see if it works before patching it....thank you again for all your help!

Maybe a dumb question, but have you tried to install any mods like SCX?

I only ask because I had the EXACT same problem but it was due to me incorrectly installing a mod.

Not yet. I wanted to see what everything looked like before adding the SCX mod package.

I still want to see what everything looks like before adding the mod package...LOL

So what did you end up having to do to make it work for you?

Ultraboy 02-11-06 05:18 PM

In my case the SCX mod required me to run a .bat file which I had not done... but it's definitely not the same problem.

Any luck on your re-install?

Uninstalled and reinstalled SC and then tried to run it without patching it. Same lock up.

Turned off Virus Software, Spyware Software and Firewall and tried to run it. Same lock up.

Disabled my Video Card driver so it would use the one on the motherboard (shared 64megs of mem). Same lock up.

This is getting frustrating. I am almost ready to dust off my old PIII in the garage with Win 98 and see if it will work on that.

As I posted in the Sonalystscombatsimulations.com forum...more and more applications and games are having problems with the dual cored capabilities. The program tries to ultilize both cores and the program wasn't designed for that. Go thru this and give us an update.

So while in the main menu screen I alt-tabbed out to the desktop. Loaded up taskmanager ( ctrl-alt-del ). Go to the apps tab and right click on the dangerous waters app. Select goto process. This will send you to the processes tab with the dangerouswaters.exe selected. Right click on the process and select affinity. Unclick one of your processors (it doesn't matter which one) so that only one processor is running DW.

Well...my AMD is not duel core, so that is not the issue.

I have pretty much ruled out the video card all together ( I think).

Ran the Direct X diagnostics...all check ok including the 3D direct draw.

Cool idea on the mmc....but no errors found.

By the way, Dangerous Waters demo runs just fine on my system. It is Sub Command that I am having the trouble with.

Thanks again for all the suggestions. Not sure what to do now.

Well...after reading this thread:

http://www.subsim.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=40602

I decided to wait as long as it takes for the 3D and/or missions to load instead of hard booting after a couple minutes and what do you know?

Anywhere from 3-8 minutes after it seems to freeze up, it finally makes it to the 3D screen or starts the selected mission. I was able to make the changes I needed on my resolution and finally run through the training scenario! :-)

The trick is to go make a cup of coffee and take a shower after clicking the ok button. By the time it is brewed and I have dried off, the mission will be starting.

I know this is still not "right", but at least I can play. I will mod up and hope for the best.

Thanks again for all your help an suggestions sonar and the rest. I really appreciate it!

Very peculiar. My system is very similar and I've had no issue like that.

Amd 3000+
Geforce fx 5900 ultra with older drivers (6693)
1 gig ram

no mods

A couple more suggestions...

1) Do you have any anti-virus software running? If so, disable it and try Sub Command. Some have reported trouble with Antivirus before.

2) If that doesn't work, try running SC in windowed mode by taking the following steps:

-Set your Windows color depth to 16-bit in Display Options
-Open properties on your Sub Command shortcut and change "Target" to:

"c:\...\subcommand\subcommand.exe" -windowed

(Include whatever directory you have it installed in, and make sure that -windowed is outside the quotation marks)

See if either of those works. Good luck! :)
