SH3 Patrol Log Editor v1.0.0 (14 March 2008)
Written by Jaesen Jones Copyright (c) 2008 JoneSoft Here DESCRIPTION SH3 Patrol Log Editor is a plug-in for SH3 Commander R3. It allows you to add unique entries to your Silent Hunter III patrol logs. The unique entries will display in both Silent Hunter III and in Personnel Files created through SH3 Commander. You must have SH3 Commander R3 installed in order to run SH3 Patrol Log Editor. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS Simply unzip directly into your SH3 Commander folder. When you next run SH3 Commander you will notice a new action titled 'Review patrol logs...'. Selecting it will load SH3 Patrol Log Editor. http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/1851/newitemfs4.jpg USAGE SH3 Patrol Log Editor lists all patrol logs for the selected career. Select a patrol log to view by clicking on it in the left panel. Further instructions on how to use SH3 Patrol Log Editor can be found by clicking on the 'Help' link in SH3 Patrol Log Editor. http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/2059/sh3pleiz8.jpg When you next create a Personnel File in SH3 Commander... http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/1083/sh3cclnd4.jpg And when you next check out your log in SH3... http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/9815/patlogxh4.jpg DOWNLOAD WHERE TO WITH THIS? The editor is quite basic at the moment, so I have deliberately released it outside of SH3 Commander in order to allow it to be updated as your suggestions and ideas come forward...and my time allows. So, as always, post your feedback here. I should also point out that if anyone else wants to create an even fancier editor, feel free. I'll happily advise what needs to be done to make it a compatible SH3 Commander plug-in. And LASTLY, pls keep in mind that this is a post-patrol editor. It allows you to edit your patrol log *after* you have completed a patrol. You will need to record any during-patrol comments elsewhere, say in Notepad, and add to your patrol log via the editor once finalised. Jaesen, you're simply amazing! :o
Forget medals, I vote we kick out that Chaplin-esque loon that's running the show and make JScones the new Fuerher in SH3! |

Cool. I guess at some point I'll add an "import" option so output from stuff like this can be effortlessly imported straight into the logs via the editor.
Which reminds me - another thing players can do is save their game just before final docking. Then they can open their save game's .crp file and copy and paste the significant entries, like weather reports (assuming they called for them in game), or ship sightings or whatever, as new log entries via the editor. In fact, my original intention was to grab the .crp file and filter out all the rubbish, leaving behind just the relevant stuff. But alas, time was the problem. |
Hmmm...expanding on my point above, I guess I could write a separate mid-patrol editor that players could use during the patrol and then when finished they could save and then import via this editor.
That way players who take hand written notes will be happy with what they have now, but players who prefer to record notes electronically while they play (via alt-tabbing) will benefit from being able to quickly import them directly into the patrol log via this editor. Perhaps just a text file in format Code:
yyyymmdd,hhmm,eventstring1 But I'll only consider an import function if enough players want it... |
Jaesen this is a fantastic tool. I'm sure loads of people will find it very useful.
Thanks a lot for all your efforts and support to the community  |
I shall give this a go.

On my last patrol, I Alt-tab to desktop and kept a running log in notepad with entries every day. For appearances, I felt the entries should not exceed 30 or 40 characters; and each line must be followed by | not period (.)
At the end of the patrol, I then copied and pasted the notepad log entries into the patrol log. I ended with a detailed, day by day log, followed by ship sinking dates, ship names, time of sinking, tonnage, and then the partol summary. All in all a very satisfactory log. Great work, JSCones; thanks. |

FYI if you start recording your notepad entries in a format like this: Code:
19400125,130,"Grid AN 44|This is a real event" Alternatively, you can use any tool that allows export to comma or tab delimited files (in other words I'm no longer planning on developing a dedicated tool just for this task). |
