John McCain, War Hero, Senator, Presidential Contender, Dies at 81 Video

Quote:

John S. McCain, the proud naval aviator who climbed from depths of despair as a prisoner of war in Vietnam to pinnacles of power as a Republican congressman and senator from Arizona and a two-time contender for the presidency, died on Saturday at his home in Arizona. He was 81.

According to a statement from his office, Mr. McCain died at 4:28 p.m. local time. He had suffered from a malignant brain tumor, called a glioblastoma, for which he had been treated periodically with radiation and chemotherapy since its discovery in 2017.

No problem, the gentleman deserves a thread of his own.

The son and grandson of Navy admirals, Mr McCain was a fighter pilot during the war in Vietnam. When his plane was shot down, he spent more than five years as a prisoner of war.

While in the custody of his captors, he suffered torture that left him with lasting disabilities.

One of a very few politicians I felt empathy and respect for.

Blue Skies Sir

Quatsch, never mind! ;) Tought about this option myself, too.

Jimbuna 08-26-18 07:27 AM

IIRC it was only yesterday or the day before that the news channels were reporting he had decided not to undergo any further medical treatment so I can only presume he knew the end was near.

Bilge_Rat 08-26-18 07:45 AM

A great person, would have made an excellent President.

RIP sir.

I knew about his medical condition and age but this was still shocking news for me. Senator McCain was one of very few politicians I truly respected.

R.I.P. Sir.

I love you forever - my beloved father @SenJohnMcCain

Quote:

My father, United States Senator John McCain III, departed this life today.

I was with my father at his end, as he was with me at my beginning. In the thirty-three years we shared together, he raised me, taught me, corrected me, comforted me, encouraged me, and supported me in all things. He loved me, and I loved him. He taught me how to live. His love and his care, ever present, always unfailing, took me from a girl to a woman — and he showed me what it is to be a man.

All that I am is thanks to him. Now that he is gone, the task of my lifetime is to live up to his example, his expectations, and his love.

My father's passing comes with sorrow and grief for me, my mother, for my brothers, and for my sisters. He was a great fire who burned bright, and we lived in his light and warmth for so very long. We know that his flame lives on, in each of us. The days and years to come will not be the same without my dad — but they will be good days, filled with life and love, because of the example he lived for us.

Your prayers, for his soul and for our family, are sincerely appreciated.

My father is gone, and I miss him as only an adoring daughter can. But in this loss, and in this sorrow, I take comfort in this: John McCain, hero of the republic and to his little girl, wakes today to something more glorious than anything on this earth. Today the warrior enters his true and eternal life, greeted by those who have gone before him, rising to meet the Author of All Things.

'The dream is ended: this is the morning.'

Dowly 08-26-18 10:04 AM

Ouch, that was quick.

RIP :salute:

I may lean left, and he may have been on the right, but he was one of the good guys. He will be missed.
