FCC will ‘take action’ in 2019 if carriers aren’t doing enough to fight robocalls

Actually, the number of spam calls to my personal cell have dropped to zero the last month or so... pretty nice.

Ajit Pai and the FCC’s commissioners are growing as incensed and fed up with robocalls as the rest of us. Today, Pai sent a letter to over a dozen US mobile providers urging them to deploy an industry-wide method of combatting the automated nuisance calls — or else. “By this time next year, I expect that consumers will begin to see this on their phones,” Pai said in a press release.

“Carriers need to continue working together to make this happen and I am calling on those falling behind to catch up.” He added that “if it does not appear that this system is on track to get up and running next year, then we will take action to make sure that it does.”

I've been getting a few lately. Sometimes I wait until the beep and say something rude, but mostly if I don't recognize the number I don't even answer them.

The ones I laugh at the most are the ones that start with "Don't hang up!"

Currently get far too many not only on the mobile but also the house phone.

The mobile call numbers are easily blocked but the house phone blocked numbers is at capacity.

thank god! they are highly annoying usually at inconvenient times and the one warning me of my pending arrest by the IRS for tax evasion is my favorite; generally in a third-world accent. https://www.npr.org/sections/alltechconsidered/2016/04/11/473847620/a-real-life-tax-scam-this-is-what-irs-phone-fraud-sounds-like I always respond in my Indian accent: sound terrified; and offer to bring cash to any place they designate...http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/gu...y-emoticon.gifto put an end to the 'monkey business' as I, a poor immigrant, do not have a checking account....and they always hang up.:ping::ping::ping: Verizon with whom I been for 33 years says they can do nothing:damn: and then they try to sell me a $1000 'smart phone'.....http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/gu...ng-himself.gif to replace my beloved 20+ year old flip phone.

BT call blocker works for me 99% of the time, nothing is 100% and for those most determine scam dogs who try it on if there is a number hit the block button. If withheld the call blocker informs me putting me on alert.

If you are not with BT jim True Call is the next best thing and stops 99% of these scum dogs. Don't bother with TPS it works for a while then the scum return.

These days, with caller ID, if I don't recognize the number, I don't pick up. If they don't leave a message, it probably was not that important in the first place.

A telephone ringing is a request, not an order.

Whitelisting is the best option, I use it for my cable phone (Telekom). Every number is blacklisted (blocked). Nobody gets through who has not been whitelisted (cleared) before. The area code of my hometown and the directly neighbourign districts, the three cellphone network codes we have over here, and a very small number of direct numbers (family, close friends) can reahc me. Nobody else whose landline phone is more than 40 km away. Callcentres have no chance - there are none inside the defined area, and the all operate via landline. However, craftsmen for example usually come from the town I live in, or from the near vicinty of it. They can reach me, so can just any cellphone user.

If need arises, I individually clear a single number from further away.

:hmmm:...

My father gets phone calls from withheld numbers and they leave no messages. These calls are clinics on Hospital grounds usually only ringing about appointments have been changed or checking up. We know they withhold their numbers when he has been able to reach the phone has checked afterwards it was withheld, most cases they ring off far to soon. They then have the cheek to send half a dozens same letters saying we tried to call you but no answer!

Only three people have my cellphone number. Now you know why. The others did not survive.

Yes it costs a lot but it works, I bought my one a few years ago before BT woke up to this problem. I was getting over ten calls a day from call centres scammers and can we wash your windows fix your roof etc etc. Bought True Call and they all went away. :03:

Best thing I ever bought. :)

Jimbuna 11-08-18 07:37 AM

High praise indeed.
