Need Computer Help...

I've got several computers in my house, but I always use the gaming on in my basement for talking with you guys and (of course) playing games.

Now, my question regards the Internet connection I've got. I'm using a Linksys WUSB54GC model, and I keep getting this error:

"Exception: GIFException aviWUSB54GC.dll in module at 000252AF."

This didn't concern me at first, and I ignored it. What this does, though, is this: I can access the Internet for the first 20 minutes or so, but then I lose the connection to it (the computer monitor icon in my tray comes up with the red X over it signalling that the connection isn't working). After maybe 25 seconds or so it will automatically reconnect.

This normally wouldn't bother me, but it makes downloading large files that will take over 20 minutes to complete impossible and it makes online play complicated.

Any suggestions on how to fix it? I've Google'd this already, but none of the answers on any of the sites I visited were helpful.

Seems to be a common problem for Linksys:

I saw "computer" and "basement" and I put 2 and 2 together...:hmm:
You have probably exceeded your porn downloading limit.:o That's my guess.

Two points: Linksys have very good help. I have spoken with them on the phone. They may have a sollution.
2> have you checked for a hardware upgrade for the firmware in your router?

Are your other systems experiencing similar problems? Maybe the wireless card in your basement PC is the problem. If your other system is still online and your basement one isn't...bob's your uncle.:smug:

Well, I've figured out WHAT I need to do; I just have no idea how to do it. I need to uninstall and then reinstall the drivers for it. This is apparently a very common problem, as SUB pointed out.

Anyone got a solution on how to go about that? Like step-by-step?

Ouch. Well, you have the name of the dll's, so it is possible to do it manually. You cannot delete the dll from any normal directory without doing it from the driver cache directory first, otherwise your system will just pop the driver from the driver cache back in. Try an uninstall first, and if that doesn't work, then do the driver cache/manual route. Let me know if you need help. It is a little more involved.

If you do decide to go the manual route, think about safety first - ie. Don't delete the files. Just rename them from say driver.dll to driver.dll.bak - simple ideas like this has saved me from many a headache since you can always 'un-do whatever it is you do'. Take it from my years of experience. I've done at one point in time every mistake ever possible! :yep: :D Its amazing I still have all my hair!

PS. You need to delete that driver from the registry too if you go the manual route.

What was it and what steps did you take to fix it ?

Stealth Hunter 07-25-08 01:14 AM

Switched USB ports. I asked this Indian guy on the Linksys phone support line, and he said to switch them. Works fine now.
