Coastal Bunkers

What's the range of the coastal bunkers? The one up ahead I'll be slipping past is described as a "Medium" one. Thanks..

Sorry, it was a lame question; I can just save, head towards it, and measure the distance when it starts firing..

Wow... thanks for the feedback.. :)

should be like 5600 to 9200... but I can't remember, and the mods sometimes change that anyway. You won't get too many "looks" at them shooting before they hit you boat. Sometimes the first or second shot, and they have you... Sometimes, night and / or submerged is the way to go, but even at night, they can be deadly accurate in short order... :salute:

I have found that with reasonable visibility and weather the coastal guns have a shooting range of up to 6 NM. I always use the compass to draw a 6 NM circle around any known coastal guns, and never go inside that range, unless it is very dark and/or raining. They will easily see and kill you on a clear night, as you may have noticed!

i concur with tbait. after extensive play in coastal situations i do exactly what tbait does: as i approach an enemy and detect coastal batteries, i start drawing 6 nm (12km if playing the german side) circles using the battery as the center point.
good luck.

I have been fired upon at 7nm, most of the time I never see them.

Depends on the mod you use

This is very true. Some mods may change aspects of the batteries. Posting your mod order with question can help others delve into the answer with a bit more clarity.

One career mission has the objective of photographing ships at the port of Osaka, at the far eastern end of Osaka Wan (Osaka Bay): to get to the bay, you sub has to negotiate the entrance, which at the northern end of the Kii-suidō (Kii Channel).
This area is infested with coastal bunkers on both the western and eastern coasts, as well as on the one of two islands that break the entrance into three channels...

Exactly, and no right-minded commander of anyone's navy would have sent any submarine into Kii Suido, much less Osaka Bay. In fact, US subs were told to stay away from them. Too heavily guarded. Not an "historical" mission. You might call it a "Hollywood Mission"... The thing to do is go to your favorite hunting ground, and find about 10,000 ton of shipping to sink, then go home. You won't be "penalized" in the game for not completing a mission. You just won't earn the renown points, which probably isn't more than 350 points anyway. A Biyo Maru is worth 180 each, 5425 tons. Sink to medium freighters, and you get the renown of 360 and the 10850 tons, and you might get a medal even!... If you are good at spotting a convoy, and not getting caught by them seeing you, and can "lock" on a target with a couple other merchants in sight, you can call in a Contact Report, and get assigned a temporary mission objective, that usually has some renown associated with it, along with the renown from the ships sunk... :salute:

Now you tell me! :k_confused:

I risked my sub and my crew, crawling submerged and at night into Osaka Bay, via the shallow ship channel between the western coastline and island, then surfaced to run at flank speed up the bay - while carefully sneaking past sub-chasers and fishing boats. I then submerged to periscope depth at about 9,000 yards from Osaka, crawled at 3 knots, until close enough to photograph the poxy merchantmen, then spent the next 12 hours at periscope depth, or just under (because the water is so shallow) evading air attacks while trying to conserve battery power. :timeout:

Once it was dark enough, I surfaced again and was able to run back at flank speed, only to discover a couple of sub-chasers were patrolling the western exit, meaning I had to take the easternmost exit. In doing so, one sub-chaser got a little too curious and I had to sink him at close range with a Mk 18 electric torpedo; fortunately, the other sub-chaser was too far away to spot me and started circling and depth charging in the wrong direction.
Meantime, I sneaked past the eastern coastal batteries, with my battery capacity running down to 15%, only to find a well escorted convoy heading up the Kii-suido: I had to lie doggo for another couple of hours, before finally escaping with my hide intact.

Should I sue Adm. Lockwood at Pearl Harbor for ordering me to undertake this mission...?

Actually, sorry 'bout that... it was me... I was bringing coffee in for the Admiral, and I accidentally sat on the tele-type machine after tripping over my shoe laces (I saved the cup, but not the coffee), and that sent the butt-coded message to you... I just now realized my mistake, looking at the copy still stuck in the machine... too much paper... :salute:
