I'm installing it right now, via software update (only a 66.7MB download via SU). It is on stage 1 of 3, which is odd since it is after the first restart, so the "downloading" part and "installing" part from SU in IE doesn't count as a stage, I guess.

P.S. prior to the first restart, SU said that it could take up to an hour to install SP1, and that the computer would need to be restarted "several times".

Update done - now running Vista Home Premium 32-bit, Service Pack 1. Looks the same, and everything thus far seems to run just fine as before. I won't really be able to determine if it improved performance for awhile yet - no time really to do much tonight. SH4 and SH3 both fire up fine, but they were working great before too, so at least nothing seems broken by SP1.

P.S. a little under 35 minutes from download (5Mb DSL line, over a 802.11G connection) to final reboot back to my login screen. The reboots during stages 1,2, and 3 of the update are all automatic, so you can walk away and just let it churn.

P.P.S. okay, one thing that is definitely snappier is print spooling. I have a wireless inkjet (HP 6988dt), and there was always quite a lag in Vista between clicking print, and anything actually happening at the printer. Now, almost as soon as the progress bar starts to fill after clicking print, the printer kicks into life and starts on the first page.

Thank YOU! very much for that link!

D'L'ing it now. Have 3 Vista based PCs. My butt kicking gaming rig, spouses business PC, and my laptop. Can't play SH4 on the laptop because of the video card.

The plan:
Installing Vista SP-1 on the laptop. Can play SH3 with GWX 2.0 on that machine.

Next my gaming rig, last, the spouse business machine.

Looking forward to the improved speed difference in copying a file to another PC. ALL rigs are on 1-gig NICs and gig switches [not hubs] , but it is still damn slow flinging around files larger the 500 meg +. I would describe it as TORTURE the waiting process for completion.

Crossing my fingers that file transfer time improving. Will report in again in the next 48 hours or less.

Again, thank you for that link.

SP1 on and running just fine here...I haven't had chance to test the boot-up/shutdown sequence yet, but I'm able to do everything just fine. DISK DEFRAGMENTOR IS BACK!!! YES!

Needs 3gb free on the Windows partititon to install, and my partition is pretty much full (on purpose, page file and all installed software on seperate partition). I can't extend the partition using one of my larger, emptier partition, and I can't select another drive to decompress to. Looks like I can't use this til next format  Thanks Microsoft.

When they say it will take an hour to install, they are not kidding. Got the laptop upgrading to Vista SP-1 and it has been 1 hour and 20 minutes and still installing. There are three main phases, seems like phase 3 is a BIG time killer. It has been stuck at 0% complete for 15 minutes now. Gonna leave it alone and let it do its thing. The laptop I am upgrading is less then one year old and I consider it high end. Hmmm. If you do not have a machine less than a year old, it could take longer?

Seems patience is the MAIN thing to have. Later ...

Wolfehunter 03-18-08 07:04 PM

Sorry it took so long I backup 18gigs of files to DVDs just encase something didn't work... But it does work well. I don't see a preformance increase yet but ..... I don't know I don't see any difference yet.:hmm: Took me an hour to install it.

My oldino PC specs.
Intel Pentium HD 3.2GHz 800Mhz E
Intel D865PERLX Socket mPGA478 mainboard
2Gigs of OCZ titanium Dual channel ram. PC3200
500Gigs HD SATA
XFX NVidia GeForce7600GT 256m
X-Fi Elite Pro Sound card
Antec True 480 powersupply

I'm hoping it fixes that blasted video crash and recovery error.

Lets see how some games work on it. Brb with the report and some photos:yep:
