Rimworld

http://rimworldgame.com/

A quick summary: a space colony survival strategy, with gameplay a bit reminiscent of Dwarf Fortress, a selectable-logic AI "dungeon master" that generates events and manages difficulty progression for the player's colony, and a space + wild west setting that's a bit reminiscent of Firefly.

Anybody have any experience or impressions of it so far? :06:
Currently in early-access alpha. Considering grabbing it for myself.

I don't own it myself (and I don't really have any plans to). I did play it a while ago though, as one of my friends owns it. I wouldn't really compare it to Dwarf Fortress though, as I doubt the game will ever have anywhere near the depth that DF does.

Graphics wise it really reminded me of Prison Architect. Gameplay/content at the time I played it seemed pretty light (which is typical of most alpha level games), and I honestly got bored with it rather fast. I do think the premise is interesting, and with polish it could shape up to an interesting game.

I have to say though, I didn't much liked the combat aspect to it when I did play it. The build-able turrets were almost worthless, and the AI storytellers tend to be right bastards (like swarming you early on with pirates that are far better equipped than you are). The combat AI was also pretty bad (zerg rush).

But the last time I looked at this game, was like 6 months ago or so.

I asked my friend what she currently thinks about the game. She likes it quite a bit, though she did say that the AI storytellers still tend to be total <censored>. She also said that the content is much better now, and the game has a lot more depth to it since I played it with her. However there are still things about it that annoy her like not being able to repair equipment, or build things like guns and armor (she said the tech you can build is all over the place, like you can build a spaceship to escape and heavy artillery, but you can't build personal weapons any more advanced than a great bow).

Thanks for the feedback

Sounds like it's still developing. I'm hopeful that some interesting things might come out of it - more than anything, I'm just intrigued by this combination of procedural simulation on the one hand, and a "story manager" on the other. I like that idea and hopefully it works out for them in the end!

I just picked up Rimworld. There is a steep learning curve and the in game tutorial is pretty pathetic. Fortunately, there are a lot of good written and video guides on the Internets Tubes.

So far it looks like a challenging game. I am on my third failed colony.

1.0 is out and it is almost identical to B19

Holy Cow, does it have a steep learning curve. Good thing there are youtube videos, but it is important to make sure you are watching the videos for the correct version.
