Give it to me straight.

I kept reading all the horror stories if the game will even start without screwing with it.

I have read them here and on steam reviews.

I have this on CD still but would rather have the steam version just easier and it is on sale again.

I just logged into Steam, and it's not available for purchase here.

Had it on CD, but my UBI account somehow dropped it. Got another key issued by UBI, which worked OK.

Beautiful graphics, and walking the sub is a nice touch. Was pretty good with mods last time I played, but I started getting too many CTD's and then the issues with the UBI launcher..........

I always end up going back to 3, and am just waiting on the GWX KC edition now.
(I just hope they fixed the destroyers jumping to instantaneous lightspeed when they see your torpedo wake.)

EDIT

I can't help myself............... I've got a new laptop, so have just downloaded the Ubi launcher, TWOS, and am just waiting on SH5 to finish downloading to give it another go. :har:

I go back to SS 1.

You like 3 the best?

So far I have 3 and 4 currently playing 4.

Still have a game going in 3 and I think I like 3 better as well.

I have over 250K sank in 4 @ 73% realism, maxed out on officers and petty officers.

Thinking STONGLY of going back to 3.

Never had the privilege of playing #1.

Finished downloading 4GB of SH5, installed, ran…….. not good.
Intro ran in a window then disappeared, but couldn’t interact. Nothing showing in task bar, or task manager. Alt-Tab wouldn’t bring up anything.
Closing the Ubi launcher warns me that the game is still running, but I can’t find it anywhere.

Downloaded 2gigs of TWOS, ran the installer. Screwed the .exe and now won’t start.:haha:

Wiped the lot, so I might try again later.

you need to disregard Uplay and download and use Uconnect.
review some of the first few threads of the SH5 forum for more experiential wisdom on playing SH5.

Yeah, was using Uconnect.

I think it might be a resolution issue, as it’s had problems with other games too.

fitzcarraldo 03-02-24 09:53 AM

Install TWoS. Highly recommended if you don´t want to get mad modding the game yourself.

Regards.

Wolfar 03-03-24 04:17 PM

The above posts is why I keep shying away from SH5.

Gotta be my laptop.

Desktop installed and worked fine yesterday.

Laptop keeps bugging out. Suspect its a scaling issue coupled with a 3200x2000 resolution. I've fiddled with options to the point that it won't boot now. Wiped it all and starting again. :hmmm:

EDIT

3rd time's a charm.

Set my PC to 1440.
Booted up the game, and set the game resolution to 3200x2000 and restarted.
So far so good.
Now for TWOS.................

EDIT

And it's borked again.

Sextant popup can't be closed.
No dock animations, and dock staff can't be interacted with. Text box comes up "INJURED".

Let's wipe again, and go for round 4 :haha:

i have to agree with you.

i had no problems installing it. minor problems running it...uplay/uconnect.
thoroughly hated playing it.
the DVD takes up space on my shelf but the game no longer takes up space on my HD.

Complete uninstall, and cclean procedure.

Installs "fine".
Boots "fine".
Main menu screen seems "fine", with animations & water effects etc.
Start a new campaign........ frozen in bunk, with no intro progression.
Start a historical mission........ crew frozen in place. Can interact with crew to a degree, but not the boat controls.

Tried most resolutions, and High DPI tweaks.
Crew stands stiff like ironing boards.

If you install from cd you need to update the game to v1.2 then install twos.

skin-nl 03-04-24 12:23 PM

I play SH5 for years now with TWOS and it works perfectly..For me it's the best subsim

1Patriotofmany 03-06-24 08:49 PM

4 is the best IMO, all the best mods, much more replayable than 3, 5 sucks so bad, I hate the third person type crap.

d@rk51d3 03-07-24 10:43 PM

FINALLY.............

In the meantime, I cranked up STEAM and downloaded Fallout NV.
Got stuck in a boot loop, with the hardware detection phase of startup.

Bit of googling revealed that some redundant Onedrive files were often the problem.
I haven't used onedrive for years, as it always stuffed around with things, and would often lose work files.

Logged in to Onedrive, disconnected the laptop from the account, wiped the Fallout NV folder in Documents......... found a SH5 folder that suddenly appeared in my Documents folder (must have downloaded from onedrove when I loggend in) and deleted it too.

Fallout NV proceded to run flawlwessly.

Redownloaded SH5......(for about the 10th time now)
Set the .exe properties for High DPI to Application...... and awaaaay we go.
:yeah:

"updated" the sh5.exe with the CD version.
Installed TWOS.
Sweet Baby Ray, it's finally working.

Now just finding the sweet spot for resolution, as 4k has tiny icons and text.

5 with TWoS can hold its own with the others

Ryder7 03-08-24 08:59 PM

Hi there, SH3 GWX for a long time here, I had SH5 with Steam but never actually played before because of the Ubi thing.
When I replaced my computer, I decided to give the 5 a real try, so I followed a straight to point guide on how to install with TWOS and the new Ubisoft connect thing:
That worked perfectly. My only additions were Alpheratz's navigation and repair mods.
Now I can't go back to the others SH except for casual and/or multiplayer, because I'm addicted to not having a gps-like map.
Sure it has sometimes a few camera glitches, and that wake you see through waves sometimes, but overall with mods, I think 5 deserves more love, and I 've found my savegames less complicated than with sh3.
Sometimes the realism menu is confusing since you actually have to set them from a campaign screen, or that won't apply no matter what you chose from main menu. (That's why I believed I couldn't get rid of the stabilized scopes but it's fine now).

So, yes, IMHO once you survive the installation process and a few hidden details, 5 is actually both close to what I loved with GWX and its own cool atmosphere: I tend to use less TC only so I can translate Enigma messages, listen to the radio, walk around the boat, get lost with my drunken navigator and my poor skills in that matter, instead of quick teleport to a torpedo shooting position I kinda used to do more with 3.

Edit: that is on the defence of 5 but not to dis 3 that I love as my first subsim and it's own style, and 4 that I just started recently and find very nice too with a change from kriegsmarine. I also want to try Wolfpack and Uboot some day, but can't see a reason not to enjoy them all games!
