Agreed
Doing the skins I can see some real oddities in the recognition manual (and also the museum) - like NL_B, and NACA3
Also some are named after the Maru System from TMO eg. Zinbu and Taihosan.
And then others are named after some sort of other classification (Big Old Split, coastal composite etc.)

It would be really good to get some some sort of consistency going on here:)

I am not really fussed which system we chose, as long as all the merchant names in game follow a consistent naming system:)

The key is in Data/Roster/Names.cfg
See screenie

http://i.imgur.com/9Y2wyQ7.png

On the left is the ship cfg name from the Data/Roster/Japan/Sea folder
On the right is what is dispalys in game (in the recognition manual, the museum and the ship sunk messages)

The important thing is for us to agree on a decent and logical system that applies to all merchant ships

Ah - looks like Capn Scurvy has beaten me to the punch

never mind - double post

Can this be done quickly enough and accurately enough? If you think so, then green light!

Not quite sure how long it would take but I will give it my best shot. Found at least two good references for IDing the ships, it's just a matter of getting them correct. :D

Just taken a look at the NACA3 (it is next on my list for skinning)

Now I know why it has this weird designation
In the ship cfg in the Data/Sea folder I found the following entry
DisplayName=JP Fast Merchant

So it seems as if the FOTRS crew wanted it to be called a Fast Merchant

However there is no entry in the Data/Roster/Names.cfg for the NACA3
The entry in the names.cfg is key to what the museum and recognition manual call the ship

Without an entry in this file it will default to whatever the actual ship.cfg file name in the SEA folder is - which in this case is NACA3

This also explains the next few ships on my list - the NL_B, and NL_C

Hope this makes sense :D

Scarily, with the little audio work I did max-peck, it does make sense...

I'm thinking that you've got a mix of stock, TMO, v1.3 & v2.0 names and aliases... How did the USN name the IJN and the foreign merchant fleets?

wow, we're over a page beyond that already... :D

I'm not quite I follow you, pb. I'm sure the naming procedure isn't that difficult, it's making the proper Id of each ship. I think I read somewhere that Maddy imported some merchant ships from SHIII. :D

I was thinking that it might be a bit much, if there was a 3rd file of names involved -AND- I left a whole line out of the comment... my train of thought derailed on the way to the ship yard. That post was supposed to have something to the effect that "... if it's a lot of work..." it might have to wait for a later mod. My bad...

Have done 4 more freighters - leaves me 3 to go - so close :D

I promised RR I would have it all finished by last Sunday, but he told me not to stress myself out over the deadline, so I took you at your word RR, sorry mate

Contains these beauties (amongst others)

What you'll really need to do, is do some homework. Go through old identification books that list names of ship classes and try to match up what the game ships look like, to what the true ships looked like and try to make a close match. Once satisfied with the match, use whatever names the real ships used for the Names.cfg file. There's lots of recourse's you could use to research the ships FOTRS added. Don't just look through the Japanese recourses, look at the English or American ship builders too. Japanese shipping lines bought foreign ships too..

Hols on a minute mates - I am sure I have seen just such a link whilst browsing old threads - this was months ago now
May take me a few days to find it - but I remember clicking on it and it being really useful
Give me a day to find the link

I've got two sources right now. One is online and the other is a book that I just happen to have. First thing I need to do is get a screenie of each of the FOTRSU merchants so I can compare pictures with what else I have. :D

Just found the source I was thinking of - it may or may not be the one you also have (I found it in the original Merchant Skins Thread)

The main page is really unhelpful - unless you happen to read Japanese!

It is just a bunch of green Japanese text - this is real zoomed in

However - if you click on each entry it gives you a cool little model of the ship in question, along with an Anglicised name

At cdrsubron7 - I cannot remember if your museum works - I know it does not work for all of us.

My museum works just fine

So - if you need museum screenshots of each ship please let me know and I will get right on it :up::up:

propbeanie 08-09-16 06:23 PM

Between the cannons, the AA guns & the machine guns, the Sasako Maru has 16 gun emplacements??... !! The others have 8-12... wow, no wonder I was getting shot up so bad the other day... They've got more firepower than a DE...:o put a sonar and a rack to drop some cans off as they go by, and they'd be really scary. Surely not all had that many guns.

Go, guys, go! This is something I never even dreamed of and you've got it on the run! You know, I never could have put together a team where the skills interlock so well and everyone seems instinctively on the same page.

CapnScurvy, I'm shocked at your radar findings and I've been living in the illusion that 30,000 yards for radar contacts was normal. If we're going to go with your 17,000 yards, I'm good with it. Just make sure we can defend it. Remember Beery at the Little BigGun? The Indians wiped him out good!:haha::haha:

Just thought I look up the Conte Verde. This passenger liner had two different Japanese names. The Conte Verde was renamed Teikyo Maru in June, '42, and in early '45 was renamed Kotobuki Maru. Check out the link below, very interesting.
