You're my new god

My dream has come true...a surface command

This was beyond my dream!A torpedo boat!i would have used even a trawler...but this is better!
Thanks,and good work!

Only a question, can i use eventually with GWX?

Fantastic work.

I'm wondering if you have any sources for the interior, so that it can be modeled as well? Don't get me wrong - the external modding work you have completed so far is extraordinary.

Also, do you think it would be possible to create a mod where you can actually play an S-Boat campaign, complete with appropriate interface screens, etc? That would be wonderful.

Also I finally got totally rid of the 3rd torpedo tube, there's no "III" button anymore on the uzo/tdc screen, and the torpedo management screen shows only 2 tubes and 2 spare torpedoes. Also changed the default torpedo loadout, so that from 1939 to 1945, the default torps are T1. I chose them because they're the only ones to be faster than the boat. (I have been almost sunk by my own slow TII 2 times in testing)

About the torpedoes: I've read somewhere (I'll find the reference if you wish and/or need) that only the schnellboots used the 44kt torpedo speed settings of the T1. U-boats used the slow and medium speeds only, and the schnellboots used only the fast settings. Ever since I read that I only used the slow and medium settings on my torpedoes.

The G7a or G7a/T1 torpedo was the standard issue torpedo for Germany during the early years of World War II. The torpedo was of standard German specifications for all U-Boat torpedoes of the war at 53.3cm (21in) in diameter, 7.163m in length, and with a warhead of 280kg Hexogen.
The torpedo was of a straight running unguided design, stabilized by a gyroscope. The G7a was of variable speed, running a distance of 6km at 44kts, 8km at 40kts, and 14km at 30kts. The 44kts setting was used only by torpedo boats like the Schnellboote. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G7a_torpedo)

Thanks ! I'm glad it's accurate, I won't have to change it back under the "historical accuracy lobby" pressure :rotfl:
It's not precised, but I would guess that S-boote used fast T1 troughout the whole war, since none of the following torpedoes were faster than 30 knots (at least I didn't find any in the torpedo.dat file)

I don't think they were all that worried about leaving torpedo wakes on the surface. I'm pretty sure that, by the time the schnellboots were in attack range potential targets were already aware of the possibilities of being torpedoed! ;) :p

They don't give a source for that quote. Navweaps says nothing about it, and they quote several sources. On the other hand, they do say that the fast setting was troublesome early in the war as it caused the torpedo engine to overheat.

You'll also find more info here and here.

I'm quite interested in this, so once you've got the boat working, if you need any assistance in creating playable campaigns (including creating S-Flotillas, new ports, patrol grids and the like), just let me know.

how bout a commerce raider like a dd or the Scharnhurst next?? they were used as commerce raider ships during the war...

NealT 02-02-08 08:16 PM

Your persistence is paying off...really looks great.

Cannot wait until it is finished and released...

sh3rules 02-02-08 08:24 PM

This looks very interesting.

Sniper_Fox 02-02-08 09:23 PM

whats the range on this thing?

gimpy117 02-03-08 12:06 AM

Ok...attempt 4

Is there any chance of having a Detchland class as a commerce raider ship....so we can really lay the pain on some ships.

i think this would be fair, we could make it almost impossible to NOT see on the surface and you must come up on a convoy to attack it and dare it's defenses!! Just think, meeting a task force and slugging it out with the big guns!

Sniper_Fox 02-03-08 01:36 AM

yeah hes right, we should get a nice comerce raider, or some kind of cruiser, its one thing to be the bismark, and rule the sea, but being your average cruiser? thatd be challenging aswell

bigboywooly 02-03-08 06:18 AM

I think the S boot is a good choice
The trouble with a heavy cruiser upwards is there is no challange unless you meet a battlegroup with a heavy or 2

USS Sea Tiger 02-03-08 06:40 AM

I fully agree, Schnelboots forever!

The big boys wouldbe nice,, but BORING,, fast in,, fast out,

I built some for Trainz, Love the s-100 klasse

What a lovely looking piece of kit http://imgcash3.imageshack.us/img412...uplargeon1.gif

gimpy117 02-03-08 12:00 PM

i would still love a Detchland class, would be fun...heck if we make it almost impossible to miss on the surface, 3 DD's would still be somthing you would not want on you. or Maybe just that "Commerce Raider" ship you see in game....
