I found this convoy during a patrol for any "Aces of the Deep" related news: I had what I wanted, and lot more.

For weeks, or maybe months, I was just an unregistered reader; then, the discussion about wishes on SHIII under development convinced me to post too; it was about the time when Skybird was called The Other.

Always used my current nick here, and in SHIII official forum later; I choosed it just because it was the name of my current captain (sadly, he had a very short life in the environment where he was born).

Out of the submarime thing, I feel amazing this place for the "general topics"; an overwiew on people's point of wiew I never saw before.

Just a bit annoyed now by the new forum, as it gives me some problem.

How did you learn about Subsim?
When did you first visit?
What do you recall about Subsim upon your first vist? (Some article, some game, maybe some forum topic, etc.)
What type of forum was Subsim using at the time? (Matt's BBS, EZBoard, phpBB 1.44, etc)
What was your name or Subsim nickname then? Same as now or something else?
Anything else you would like to mention (nostalgic times, people, events in the Subsim community):

Try to be as accurate as you can, thanks. This will be part of the SP.
Neal

How did you learn about Subsim? Researching something related to subs.
When did you first visit? 1999, goofing off @work
What do you recall about Subsim upon your first vist? (Some article, some game, maybe some forum topic, etc.) I couldn't beleive that there were other people who loved submarines as much as me.
What type of forum was Subsim using at the time? (Matt's BBS, EZBoard, phpBB 1.44, etc) ???
What was your name or Subsim nickname then? Same as now or something else? JasonL or U-9
Anything else you would like to mention (nostalgic times, people, events in the Subsim community): I was the first one to notice(post) the AI in SHII. I remember the whole fiasco leading up to sh2. The Drebbel trial.

nikimcbee 06-26-06 12:55 AM

...I forgot to mention:damn: the "Who killed the cat post."

How I found SubSim?

I had some weird GFX issues with SHII and started googling around and eventually ended up here. This was in April 2004. I think I registered the same day I came here and before I made my first post.
I remember the first reply to my question was something along the lines of "Tough luck, pal." How very helpful indeed, hahaha! And no, I never solved the friggin' problem.

Nickname was the same as now, my initials basically.

Oh, the good ol' "..Curiosity Killed The Cat®"-thread... But hey, how was I supposed to know it would escalate with such scale?
I mean, I was new to this whole forum thing and while reading old threads I was stubmling on these "BUMP"-posts all the time. And no matter how much I tried to figure them out, I couldn't.. so I asked :88)

Oh yeah, the Drebbel trial was also fun.. not that I had anything to do with it.. *ahem*

You forgot to mention the great work you did for the 2005 Subsim redesign!

JJ 07-08-06 05:23 AM

Oh yeah, hehe. Well, I'm a modest guy. Wouldn't wanna brag about it.. Especially if somebody thinks it's crap. That way they won't know it was me, hahaha :lol:

How did you learn about Subsim?

Google (or maybe it was hotbot) back when i was deciding on if i should get sh2 or not

When did you first visit?

Roughly when sh2 came out :)

What do you recall about Subsim upon your first vist? (Some article, some game, maybe some forum topic, etc.)

Forums (all of them pretty much as i had most of the games listed in the various forums) and the mod section. The review section was nice too, but mainly it was the forums and mods section :)

What type of forum was Subsim using at the time? (Matt's BBS, EZBoard, phpBB 1.44, etc)

I think but im not 100% it was just before the switch from EZBoard to php. But i could definatly be wrong (i can hardly remember the day before let alone 5+ years back) :)

What was your name or Subsim nickname then? Same as now or something else?

NeonSamurai has been my nickname for 10 years online on many different communities.

I would also like to say that subsim has been for all these years one of my favorite homes that i always come back to. Mainly i like the environment here. We dont tollerate flamers, trolls and other people who make most other online communities a living hell (look at any MMO company forum for an example of forums at their worst). Partly i think its this way as we tend to attract older gamers, but mostly i think its because the Subsim staff and moderators (myself included) try hard to keep this place clean, helpfull, and friendly. As long as this place exists i will stay.

Hmm guess i should say something about myself

Name: Korey
Age: 32
Status: Single
Birth Sign: Taurus (if it matters to you)
Proffession: Computer Tech (hardware, networking, network/general security etc) currently but looking to do something else.
Born in: Montreal Canada
Current Location: Ottawa Canada

Hmm well what can i say about me that isnt my entire life story or read like some personal's advert in a newspaper/dating service :)

I tend to be a calm and relaxed person and it takes alot to tick me off, i like helping others, though i only tend to speak/post when i feel the need to (thats why i only have like 550ish posts in almost 5 years). Out of those posts i would say 70% of them are me helping someone with some game. I generaly dont tend to chit chat and i generaly hate small talk (talking for the sake of filling the void with inane useless chatter is one of my biggest pet peves).

Education wise i would say im about 99% self educated, i learned pretty much nothing from school (long story and one not worth getting into) having previously taught it to myself. I did complete highschool, never studied a day in my life, and almost never did homework either (i was stubborn and refused to waste my time on such pointless excersises). Now at 32 im looking to go to university, planning on getting a doctorate most likely in psychology.

As for gaming, my tastes are pretty varried, i guess thats why i ended up as the "Other Games" forums moderator. I played everything from PNP Dungeons and Dragons and other RPGs, Also various wargames particularly one who's name i forgot (it was a well known pnp modern naval wargame in the 80's, you could get the jane's reference books and take the stats from it and play the game, sort of like harpoon). As for video games, well i started playing them when they came out, from pong on up. My first subsim was of course Gato (use to play hours each day on that one, i ended up sinking every ship about 10 times and having to reset the sunk list), and i played most of the classics since gato (modern and ww2). I also play FPS games (realistic or not), MMO games, racing games, RPG games, and pretty much everything else but sports games (which i generaly dont care for.

Well Neal, I started surfing on subsim.com right before I bought SHII. I had seen SHII on the shelf at walmart and thought I should readup about it before I bought it. A google search brought your place up.

At that time ya'll were on the EZBoard forum, but I never did join there.. You went to the next version, I can't remember (PHP I think). That is when I joined, I had gotten SHII by then and was needing help.

That was late 2001 IIRC.

Hey, I even had threads with hate-mail type-o-stuff: http://www.subsim.com/phpBB_2002/vie...8588&forum=9&4

Camaero 08-10-06 12:43 PM

I started first checking it out when I got.... I have been sitting here trying to remember the name of it but it has just slipped my mind right now. It was a sub and surface game that came out quite awhile ago. I can not bloody well remember the damn name for some reason.

Anyway, while searching for tips on it, I came upon this website. Soon after I started checking out SHIII which had already been out awhile and so I bought it and have played nothing but SHIII ever since. (Well as far as naval games go.)
