Description
The New Playable Subs & More Mod

This mod aims to add new playable subs to the game, along with other tweaks and changes.

Simply unzip the override folder into Steam\SteamApps\common\Cold Waters\ColdWaters_Data\StreamingAssets and then run the game.

IMPORTANT: Each time you download an updated copy of the mod, make sure you completely delete your old override folder before installing the new one. DO NOT OVERWRITE EXISTING FILES!

  • NEW CLASS: Excelsior Class SSN (USA) - Added as a special gift for Outerexodus
  • NEW CLASS: Project 748 SSAN (Russia) - Never actually built, but designed to be capable of transporting an invasion force and landing it covertly.
  • NEW CLASS: Kilo Class SS (Vietnam)
  • NEW SINGLE MISSION: Artic Takeover - Use the Project 748 SSAN to launch an invasion force.
  • Changed the Borei model from the Delta IV to the Yankee so it looks a lot more realistic.
  • Moved the Jive Turkey and Excelsior class subs to the end of the US sub selection list.
  • Added a new note to the descriptions of theoretical sub designs - "THEORETICAL DESIGN" will now appear at the top of the "Notes" section for all classes that were not actually built in real life, but could have been if work had continued on those designs, meaning they're somewhat realistic and balanced.
  • Added a new note to the descriptions of fantasy sub designs - "FANTASY DESIGN" will now appear at the top of the "Notes" section for all classes that were not built and are not realistic.
  • Fixed the missing Victor III masts. If anyone spots any other missing masts, please let us know so we can get them fixed.
  • Fixed the Narwhal model errors.
  • Various updates on US helo models & sensors.
  • Various texture updates to US ships.


Known Bugs
  • While we have fixed the bug with the Typhoon at periscope depth, this has had a side effect of creating a new bug where the cavitation animation does not appear in the correct place behind the sub. There's no known fix for this at this time.


Github Developer Version
The developers of this mod use Github to coordinate all of our work, but is publicly accessible to anyone. The active development version of the mod is always available to download from there at any time. If you choose to download the code from the GitHub, be aware that you're getting the latest updates from all developers and that it's possible that bugs or issues may still be present. Knowing this, if you'd like to download the latest code, simply click the green "Clone or Download" button on the page and choose "Download ZIP". This will download the latest development override file to your PC, then you just install it like you normally would.

How To Customize The UI Toolbars
The positions of the UI toolbars for helm, depth, and sensors can be customized via the HUD text files if you don't like how we have them by default. In order to change their positions, you want to open the "override" folder and then open the "hud" folder. In here, you want to open the 3 text files - default.txt, russian.txt, and uk.txt.

In the default.txt file, scroll down to Line 231 (or, alternatively, scroll down and look for [HUD LAYOUT] in the file, the code blocks are a bit below that). Starting at line 231, you'll see three blocks of code. Each block is a specific option for how the toolbars will be placed, each with a description above the block for what it does. Here is what the text blocks look like:

By default, the bottom block is the one that is active and forces the toolbars to appear stacked just to the right of the minimap. If you'd like to change this option to one of the other available options, then simply remove the // in front of each of the 5 code lines of your choice (DO NOT remove the // from the description text). Then, add // in front of the 5 code lines on the middle block so that you're commenting it out. Do the same thing for the other two text files, and you're done. Be aware that you'll need to do this each time the mod is updated.

Been using this mod all day, and I must say it has been spot on its not caused any problems for me that I've seen.
I just cant get enough of watching a missile fly vertical out of the water!

Brilliant **** man! Thinking about modding sonar stuff myself. Seems like Mk.48 is almost TOO op, and sub detection ranges are too far. Gonna see if I can get some surface vessels playable, as well as make countermeasures more effective for BOTH sides.

OrangeFr3ak - I hadn't planned on adding any further classes at this point, almost every sub is playable now. I don't think there's much difference between the Delta III and IV...

@CaptainX Although there may not be much differences, I think for variety the Delta III should be added since the hull is a different color and can be seen as the bridge between the Yankee and Delta IV.

No, it won't co-exist with the LA/VLS mod. They will conflict. However, the 688i class in this mod has VLS, and so do several of the Russian classes.

Try deleting your override folder and then extracting a new copy from the zip file. The Mk50 text file is definitely in the mod.

zippaway - No, I'm not adding playable ships, that's not currently possible to do reliably within the game engine. I know another mod out there has tried it, but those playable ships do not work on the single missions or campaign in the vanilla game, it requires special missions. In addition, the weapons don't work properly. We won't be seeing playable ships unless the devs add them.

There is no Oscar II or Akula model in the game, and modders cannot add models at this time.

But WOW. It really is amazing what some people can do. I really hope the Devs come out with a true Soviet Campaign, against NATO warships, but this is really awesome. They can basically take this mod, add the campaign, and it be a working patch. Great job!

I would like to ask. Is it possible to add VLS some subs like the Typhoon (Including red october) and Delta classes? I know they were Boomers, in reality, carried SLBMs, but couldn't you add something like a TLAM with a "modified" warhead in the mod? Then you have the equivalent of a nuclear weapon, without too much modification. Just a though. Other than that, there are very few things I will comment on. Also, it seems that both Typhoons have VERY low sonar rating.... I have to be at a dead stop to hear anything with active sonar. Thoughts?

but I get a problem about wire-guided torpedoes
most of time when I fire these torpedoes like USET-80 wire will break
so I want to know what limit they have
or not all russian subs can use wire-guided torpedoes

What you'll want to do is the following;

On STEAM;

Open STEAM > Play the game > Hit Command + Tab to go back to finder > once out of the game and have the home screen up, right click game icon > Follow "Not on STEAM" steps

Not on STEAM;

Right click game > Options > Show in finder
There, youll see the game, a changelog, a mod guide, and a manual.
Right click "Cold Waters" > Show Package Contents
This pulls up a new window. From here, open the (only) folder "Contents"
From "Contents" > Resources > Data > StreamingAssets
In this folder, youll have a default folder and maybe an override folder. If you have another mod, you WILL have an override folder. From there youll want to download the mod from this page and put that folder in the StreamingAssets folder, but NOT in the default folder. They should be side by side. Then just start the game and boom. There will be the US subs, the Russian subs, and then Russian playable subs.

I've gotten the mod properly downloaded on Mac and it's also onto the streaming assets right next to default but I can't seem to play anything starting any campaign won't work there's only one mission and it looks like the start button doesn't work can anyone help me. I've been looking around on the thread and it looks like a couple of people are having same problems as well. Thank you
