I think we should establish all times in reference to GMT (we're basically all doing that) and I'm going to mention this thread over in the main forum, just in case others don't notice for some reason.

Well multyplayer in SH3 is really simple. You join/create a server or "room" ,people join -you choose your crew(early war, late war...),your sub and click "ready".The one who created the server choses difficulty and game type. There are 2 "types" of games."Generated" and "Missions".Missions are ,well,pre-made missions .Generated is a mode where the creator of the room chooses what to attack ,like a task-force or convoy, the size ,the escort experience/size and things like that.Basicly, you play like a wolf-pack.You and your team-mates stalk the convoy/tf/whatever and sink what you can:D

Well-kind of .When you go to the "Multyplayer" screen you should get somewhere you have to log-in but you can create an accout in-game.Just enter a user-name and pass and that's it.Then you can see the "lobby" where all games are shown.Maybe I'll host one when I come home from some University classes today ,hope mine works.
Torvald Von Mansee-what mods did you guys use?Make sure you use the same exact things and if you have GW make sure you have the same options enabled.I have played GW and NYGM and RUB with my friends on-line a lot of times and never really got CTD's.
Once spent about 2 hours sinking a convoy(if not more)only with the deck-gun with 2 of my friends (all using the IXC and XXI ) after we had lost all our torpedoes and only sank about 2 ships out of ...a lot.Bernard was probably on our ships that day...

Well, that was pretty cool!!! I think it was only me and The General who stayed in the game.
I was able to get one kill on a medium cargo ship, from one of my FAT torps. I hit a large cargo w/another, and while it didn't go down, it was entirely on fire the length of its deck, so I think it's safe to say that would also be a kill. I remember hitting a third ship, as well. I know The General also got some hits in, but at one point I believe he was forced to the surface where he undoubtably got completely pwned.
I got depth charged and rather heavily damaged. I thought I stopped all the heavy flooding, but kept hearing a hissing in game. I was still trying to repair myself when the server quit.
EDIT: D'OH!! While I was posting this, The General started another server and it's full.

The General
08-18-2006, 01:54 PM
Yes sir, the boys (Torvald and I)were kicking ass and taking names, in the thick fog I might add. Between us we chalked up at least three large tankers, plus I heard dozens of other explosions and cries of terror in the fog.
Total Carnage on the high seas. :arrgh!:
P.S.I'll see you boys at the top of the hour. 20:00 GMT.
Torvald Von Mansee
08-18-2006, 02:48 PM
Well, I seem to have unexpectedly quit out of Moby's game, AGAIN, but I'll try to get back on.
Yes, seeing that troop transport and the destroyer go up was rather satisfying!!! :rotfl:
The dud torpedo hitting that destroyer DEAD ON was significantly less, though...
The General
08-18-2006, 02:53 PM
There I was, on the surface, taking fire from all sides, just about to send another tanker to the giant Naval-Yard in the sky and POW, the game crashes!
It could be my high ping as you guys are (Master and Commander) on the far side of the world.

From the Horse's mouth:
To play GW online as you know all must have the same version installed. That would mean all must either have GWv1.0 or GWv1.1a. Also all must have the same Campaign and Flotilla files. Now since there are several different types of Campaign/Flotilla files floating around this is where I suspect you maybe running into a problem. There are the Vanilla GWv1.0 set, the Vanilla GWv1.1a set plus the 3 sets of Unified Campaign Mods done by Rubini for GW/NYGM/Stock merge. Now of those sets done by Rubini only 1 set would I recommend. That being his "Unified Campaign Mod for Stock". So as you can see its quite possible ppl have GW but not quite the SAME GW as each other.
I'm very pleased to see this budding online GW game play (and I know so is Kpt Lehmann), and with the next release being so much more I think you will have less dramas with compatability issues and there for expect many hours of online fun sinking ships in Grey Wolf Packs.
Carry on.

mr chris
08-19-2006, 03:11 AM
I have GW 1.1a am running some mods for my current career but do deactivate them all for when i play online. But am going to make a dual install so i have a unmodded version of GW just for online play.
The General
08-19-2006, 08:29 AM
It is now Saturday 14:00 GMT. I had a great time yesterday fighting alongside Chris, Moby and Torvald, against some very tough Hombres, and am hoping for more of the same today. I will be online from 16:00 GMT if anybody is interested. Password is: Moby. That way I don't have to write: 'You must have the Greywolves MOD...', 200 times!
On the subject of those problems we were having yesterday; I have the 1.1a Version of GW, have a hull skin Mod for my Type VIIC and a couple of small Mods, like the 'Speed of Sound' mod. Will any of that stuff cause problems? I'm not too experienced with messing around with config files, so maybe one of you could advise? I found that there were no crashes when only Torvald and I were playing, so the problem may lie with the differences between our setup and Moby's setup.
Over.
Cdre Gibs
08-19-2006, 09:51 AM
Ok, files that make problems for online play are:
All CFG Files, none can be different than any other (Host - Clients)
ALL Campaign Files, none can be different than any other (Host - Clients)
All EQP Files, none can be different than any other (Host - Clients)
All SIM Files, none can be different than any other (Host - Clients)
All INI Files, none can be different than any other (Host - Clients)
Thats it.
The best bet would to be to run the online games with either vanilla GW1.1a or vanilla GW1.1a with ALL players having the same Unified Campaign Mod files.
The easiest is just plain Vanilla GW1.1a.
The good news is, that TGA Mods have NO impact if they are just standard 1 for 1 TGA swaps.

You ever get that sinking feeling?
Today at around 16:00 GMT, Capt.Torvald and I encountered a landing party off the coast of The Ascension Islands. Unfortunately we only managed to chalk up a single kill (Capt. Torvald), before succumbing to heavy depth-charging. My idea to run deep, at flank speed, going straight at 'em, was made possible, thanks to land dropping sharply to the Atlantic sea-bed, a few hundred yards off-shore. Unfortunately my bravado got the better of me, but I did manage to hold the enemy's attention, whilst Cap'n Torvald got our first catch (and last) of the day.
Better luck next time!

I know we have stated this before, about its best to have a Vanilla GW1.1a installed game for all to play online, but if your still experiancing connection issues then it has to be a diffeance in your install's. Its that simple. Things that can cause issues beyond what I have listed is also new ships, since its part of the englishnames.cfg file thats compared. This is also the same for planes, any new planes cause issues as well becuase planes also have their own englishnames.cfg. In fact aircraft in general seem to cause issues online.
In over something like 600 Online games of SH3/GW that I have played with Pants I can say that in all honesty Planes do cause issues. So best to use missions without out Aircover selected if its a generated mission. For Custom missions try to select missions that have no scripted planes in. And if you wish to do battle with a Task Force, chose a type without an Aircraft Carrier. Now hopefully after the next release I may FINALY get around to sorting all the known plane issues regarding online play, but atm its not something I have looked at yet regards online issues.
1 last thing, and thats SH3Commander. IF you use SH3C to launch SH3/GW and have used SH3C to change settings, guess what, your games are no longer compatable. Now SH3C is a bloody good program that does some pretty niffty things, BUT for online play every 1 MUST have the same files, and since SH3C makes alterations to those files, well you get the rest. Now it be ok if Every1 thats joining your game (this is to the Host) has SH3C and HAPPEND to change all the same bits that you did. But if they didnt do exactly the same changes you have, disconnect.
So in retrospect, for online play a standard launch of SH3 with the GW1.1a mod either installed directly into your SH3 game or via the mod enabler program is your safest bet. I would however always recommend that GW1.1a is installed directly into SH3 and launch via a normal SH3 launch for online play. Less chance of anything going amiss.

Umm, sorry guys but I forgot 1 other major bit, and thats the scene.dat, it must match. You cant have 8km and 16km installs playing together online. The other area that may cause an issue is also scene related, I'm not 100% sure of this but the scene dark and the scene light versions may also be an online issue. I know its a setting rather than a TGA in the scene.dat file, so therefore I'd suspect it could be an issue as well.
I'd be interested in any feed back on what versions of the scene.dat file that you guys are using. Thx.

You could have a Yellow Submarine to go with your treasuse chests and belly dancing mermaid's and it wouldnt matter 1 bit. They are just plain skins. So that 1's ok. :)

That's it, the only logical explanation. Is there someone who can post a scene.dat file, that we can all overlay over our existing files? Thus saving ourselves lengthy reinstallations.
This will hopefully render our setups compatible online?
Thankyou Commodore Gibs for your help.

Another thing SH3 in general does not like, is software firewalls. If your using 1 it will cause problems. The SOP is to turn OFF your software firewall whilst playing SH3.
The other bit to make for stable games is of course the old port forwarding routine for routers. I know you guys have done port forwarding or you wouldnt be able to play online, but sometimes ppl dont always get all the ports correct. Also a client normaly wont need to port forward, only the host, well I've found that it also helps if the client has as well, just another oddity of SH3.
The correct Ports for SH3 are:
8 Players can join: TCP/UDP 17997 thru 18003 (port range)
Ubi Ping: TCP 667
Ubi.com: TCP/UDP 40000 thru 42000 (port range)
Ubi.com2: TCP/UDP 43500

Capt Torvald and I were on patrol in the Med when we encountered a supply convoy bound for Montgomery's desert troops. It was escorted by a Nelson Battleship and an Illustrious Carrier. Unfortunately our Italian friends sustained heavy losses in the skies overhead before the mighty luftwaffe could arrive to support them. Needless to say, our boys gave 'em Hell when they arrived.
During the battle Capt Torvald, in a typically heroic effort, managed to slam 5 topedos into the hull of the great Carrier. Sadly Capt. Torvald didn't live to see the fruits of his labour and the Carrier was last seen limping away, sagging heavily astern.
I faired poorly however and failed my Furer, only managing a single hit on the Battleship before succumbing to a lucky strike from a retched English Destroyer.

As you can see in the first photo, I'm using a (1945 version) Type XXI in 1942.
I thought only two of those ever actually got out on patrol, and one of those patrols was only like four days old when the war ended.
I don't want to be accurate, I want to be FUN!!
Oh, and I only hit the carrier four times!! *sigh*
Given that the Luftwaffe was in the area, it could have been finished off by them!!
I want to play that scenario again, sometime.
Oh, and General: remember when we played this very same scenario and I was killed by a lucky depth charge only like 10 minutes in? You positioned yourself far better for your attack on the Nelson then I did on the carrier, but you only had one torp loaded up!!

Just a thought guys. The player name above the torpedo's, I'd recommend turning it off because when you get a few players all shooting at once all you will get is a sea of red floating names and the targets become difficult to see. The player names above the subs is fine because it allows 1 to see at a glance where every 1 is.
If you dont know how to turn the names off, just ask ok. :)

Not sure what the torrent is to be honest
If it is 1.1 then use the JSGME mod installer - a great piece of software that allows you to add\remove mods simply
Gizzmoe
09-06-2006, 09:35 AM
The Torrent is 1.1a.

mr chris
09-06-2006, 11:26 AM
The JSGME mod installer is well worth having as it makes mods easy to install and deactive so you dont have to keep uninstalling and reinstalling the game everytime you want to take away certian mods. You just click deactivate. Hope this helps

Just a heads up for all you online players. At the release of GWX I would HIGHLY recommend a Clean install of SH3, patched to 1.4b and GWX installed directly into SH3 from the autoinstaller. IF there are options in the installer make it very clear what 1's you have on. Even better yet, after you have all installed and played around a bit, get together on here and decide on what will be the online standard install. I'm sure you will be able to come to an agreement on what you all want.

I have no firewall, but I'm pretty well protected with my KAV 6.0 set at High all the time.
About opening ports, any suggestions on how to do that? And which ones does SH3 MP use, cause I don't wanna start opening wrong ports and causing damage by hackers!
bigboywooly
10-01-2006, 03:54 AM
Well I am certainly no expert in that side of things
I know for my router i went into its config and set up a port for SH3 which I can switch on or off at will
Certain firewalls\antivirus will not allow outside "pings" to your computer
If yours is blocking these too it may be thats the reason
SH3's multiplayer abilities allow you to play either on UbiSoft hosted game servers or on privately hosted LAN and Internet based servers.
The following TCP and UDP ports should be opened to allow for SH3 multiplayer gaming:
TCP/UDP ports 17997 through 18003 - allows up to 8 players to join
TCP port 667 - UbiSoft ping
TCP/UDP ports 40000 through 42000 - Ubi.com
TCP/UDP port 43500 - Ubi.com2Retrieved from "http://www.communitymanuals.com/shiii/index.php?title=Multiplayer (http://www.communitymanuals.com/shiii/index.php?title=Multiplayer)"

OK, THX you very much, I appreciate it very much!
I know I'm asking too much, ut I'm kindda a noob at this and I don't want to bother my neighbour (who has the knowledge).
HOW? do you open up those ports? Is it already incorporated in Win, any speacial programes or it depends on the router? If last, then I'll ask someone else, if otherwise, help is apreciated (again).

Depends on the Router. You need to Browes to your routers Web Interface, find the Advance tab and usually under that will be another tab for Portforwarding. If you dont have the Manual for your router, which usualy covers this sort of thing, the router its self has (most times) a help section. This will also show you "How To". Failing that goto the website of your Routers Manufacturer and D/L the manual for your Router Model.
Good luck.

OK, the good news is, that I have managed to access the router control and get into advaced options (I thought I forgot that password :damn:).
This is what I get, when I select Forwarding rules.
Forwarding Rules http://192.168.2.1/p6.gifVirtual Server - Allows others to access WWW, FTP, and other services on your LAN. http://192.168.2.1/p6.gifSpecial AP - This configuration allows some applications to connect, and work with the NAT router. http://192.168.2.1/p6.gifMiscellaneous - IP Address of DMZ Host: Allows a computer to be exposed to unrestricted 2-way communication. Note that, this feature should be used only when needed.
- Non-standard FTP port: You have to configure this item if you want to access an FTP server whose port number is not 21 (when Client uses active mode).
From the little knowledge that I have I think the virtual server would do the trick, but I'm not sure.
Now can someone tell me where I have to put in, to get access? (There is no "How to?" section!)

DAMN!!! I probably didn't catch you, as I saw your message an hour after you posted it (I had lunch). I tried GW, nothing, I tried vanilla, nothing!
I'd really like to know what the triggers are for SH3 MP (described in my last post)!

I am still here if you want to play? I can host one now if you like?

I don't want to play, just check if it works (probably not, as I still can't connect to Ubi.com or LAN, even with the ports open)!
That's why I asked if anyone knows the trigger for the MP ports!
But THX, for the offer. Looks like, I'll have to stick to SP for a while longer!

I've tried downloading Gw 1.1a from the links in the page you provide (at subsim) and I get 404 errors

I believe that the SubSim broadwith has been used up. Go to the GW main page and choose the European server, or go to filefront where you can get the whole thing in one package!

Welcomr back Chris. I will not be on this weekend. I am heading to my brothers to build him a new computer and do a little deer hunting. If we can find it, he will get SH3 and I will hook him up with the GW mod and have another person playing with us and on Vent.
Good luck this weekend if you get a pack running together.
Hey did you retry the 3 missions now that they were looked over and fixed?

Thanks Chris,
I sent the other files you sent me to BBW but I am not sure he got them. Maybe you can send him the rest so he may be able to iron out the problems with those as well. There are a lot of good missions that would be great to play with the rest of us in...
It is early yet in the season, but I hope to get something to put in the freezer. My son and daughter both love deer meat.
I have to get going. I am at work and have to do a couple of things then I am out of here on my way to Carls. About 3 hours from where I work. Have fun this weekend and keep the DD's off of everyone....YOu guys are welcome to get in vent. any time you like. You don't have to wait for me to be with you to get on....Bring as many as you can in when playing...
