MUltiplayer and how do i do it

New to this, and love the game. But id like to start a multiplayer game, host the server but i hear all this talk of turning your firewall off to be able to see the ping. Now here is the question.
Are we talking about Windows firewall or some external one only. I dont have an external firewall running, but have no idea if my ping is being shown in the games list.

Or am i missing something extra in order to host a game.

The problem is if you have a NAT firewall usually intergrated into some routers then you need to do some port forwarding. Ports 17997 to 18001 need to be forwarded to your machines IP address otherwise when you host the game no one will see your ping and will not be able to connect. Once you are in game if you hit the ESC key and select OPTIONS you can disable or enable the torpedo and player icons. Hope that helps.
