How was I detected?

It's early 1940 and I had just received a report on a convoy heading my way. I basically parked my sub right in front of the convoy's heading so that I would be in the midst of it during its approach (there was a juicy C2 in the middle).

Anyway, I was at a deadstop, rigged for silent, when the flower corvette in front passes right by me and makes a U-turn. I thought it was just acting normally when it starts heading for me again. Before I know it, it starts pinging me and I hear the "We've been detected" warning. How did it know I was there? Do they have a passive radar or something that's always active?

That depends; if you steamed fast ahead of the convoy, they could have heard you then, and been alarmed.

In rough sea at periscope depth sometimes your conning tower comes out of the water - then they spot you some times... caused often enough Ralf Richter to yell alaaaaarm fluuuuuuten :shifty:

I kinda steamed in but had dived to periscope depth far before parking in front of the convoy. It was weird because, I figured that if they had heard me earlier or spotted me, then the escorts would've headed to my position. Could they have known that I was there and just played possum so that they could attack me the way they did?

The seas were pretty calm and my stealth meter had stayed green all throughout, that is, until they started pinging me.

Could it have been my profile?

to my experience, the escorts are performing search maneuvers while on escort position. the u turn, which migh look suspicious, could be a part of a standart circle course. as soon as you are infront of them, without enough depth, they will simply find you via standart ping search.
i had multiple sitiuations, where an escort suddenly raced in my general direction, but i soon found out that they are doing stuff like this on a irregular basis. its a very nice touch of the dd´s ai, imho.

Can they detect me without pinging and while my sub is rigged for silent running? I could understand if I was making noise but I wasn't. :-? I could also see how they might have seen my periscope but my stealth meter was completely green even as it zipped a couple of meters in front of my bow.

It was after that U-turn that everything went awry. I guess I could just attribute it to visual contact.

i have encountered this before, i too got ahead of a convoy and waited for it to arrive (it was detected 3 days away). i sat at 50m, silent running at dead stop.

but an escort running ahead of the convoy still managed to detect me as soon as it got close, it even managed to follow me and stalk my posistion at the instant i changed direction.

i didnt realise that the royal navy employed mind readers.

Silent running isn't the same as dead silent. It only means that you shut down functions like pumps that ain't vitally important for your survival. You do not perform any activity like repair jobbs or torpedo loading or any such work that might make noice. The crew doesn't move around if not necessary and keep al noice to a minimum. All in all, you keep the noice your u-boat makes down to a minimum but you will always be making some noice. It makes it harder for others to hear you but they can still pick up sounds if they happend to be in the right place at the right moment.

Silent running is not a cloaking device.

123A: MaxRange=1200m, sensitivity=0.04, Elevation =90 to 100.

128A: MaxRange=1500m, sensitivity=0.05, Elevation =90 to 100.

The DD has ACTIVE sonar on all the time. It reflects off your hull and they hear you. It has nothing to do with how much noise you make for its case.

Making noise by moving will be picked up by its PASSIVE sonar the hydrophones.

The active sonar in the game is just not modelled very well. In order to make it better, I nerfed it in angle for more narrow beam (-+90 to -+65) and in minimum distance lock on; SonarDC. That helps alot in escaping and being detected in the first place.

The Acitve sonar in the game is just too good. I believe a change to sensitivity, Elevation is in order so they simulate a better model. There was the long range but slow search sonar, then an extra Q type sonar attachment added for up close to spot you at depth. Much shorter range. New version I think needs to be made.

Have you tried the SonarDC_fix ? It takes affect immediately. Try it on a reload, the more narow angle and minimum distance of 200m may just do the trick for you.

This stuff is not modeled. So I try to fiddle around to get a detection feel for what it should kind of act like. The way it is, I think the sensitivity should be changed by factor of two, and range nerfed by 33%.

Of course the DD crew can be from Green to Elite and get bonus to range and detection also. You may just caome across an Elite Flower Corvette.

I posted a thread pretty much along these same lines a while back.

There was a pretty lively disscussion...but the one and only thing I gained from it all that I could put into practical use was..... Do Not Get Directly In Front Of A Convoy.

This advice worked for me..now I make sure to come in from the side to attack any convoy.

I know...I know...getting in front of a convoy,then lying in ambush, makes good tactical sense and this tactic worked superbly in CAOD...but sadly in this Sim ...the escorts seem to find you no matter how quite and/or deep you are...once you position your boat directly in the convoy's path.
