I don't think anyone's brought this up but I was wondering what everyone's experience has been with these more advanced torpedoes. Some are passive homing and some use a search pattern or loop. I like the idea of having a couple homing torpedoes for defense but would rather use the electrics and my shooting skills for attacks. I tried a couple in my last patrol and they don't seem to run the same. I fired one at a T3 at my favorite sweet spot and the torpedo made a loop or something instead and hit the ship amidships instead of being a keel shot.

Any thoughts?

There are acoustic guided torpedoes that home in on the target. and there are track running torpedoes.

Acoustic torps are supposedly useless on anything moving less then 12kts, but I have had some luck on taking out C2s props with them.

With the pattern torps you need to access the settings on them in your tdc. You'll see an extra button above the torp # there where you can change the settings. make sure you set the initial range run to > then the target distance otherwise it make a turn and begin running its pattern before it actually reaches the target.

I really haven't a whole lot of success with them after they miss the initial target. everynow and then they'll take a ship that happens to cross its pattern.

I haven't had much success with the patern ones. Have taken out a few DD's with the homing ones.

Sometimes I`m using the accoustic torpedoes but only to save myself from an attacking destroyer - I treat it rather like, say, Tauschkorper or other means that are supposed to save my skin.
I think it`s a bit extravagant to use them in a campaig against merchants. They cost quite much.

Here is my understanding of the utility of the acoustic torpedo. It was originally developed on the premise that they would give the submarines one or two each to use against the escort ships. The idea being that escorts rarely travel slow and their engines are loud. When there was a wolfpack and each sub had one or two acoustic torpedoes they could denude the convoy of escorts. So, get an escorts attention (or just shoot one at an escort while it is weaving) and have them come right at you then shoot an acoustic at them and watch the fun as they explode while trying to get you. I keep one in tube 5 so when I try to get away, I can get them. I have seen an acoustic miss, then circle around and around until it hits its target. I have also seen where they can be wasted on cargo ships (as I have done that myself) but in that circumstance it was the only torpedo I had left.

iwe had about 85% kill with accustic fish, most DD's i kill head on with a accustic, and sometimes i have a nice 90 degree hit on them.

the 15% non hits are fish that hit the propeller, and eighter get tossed through the air or sink...

I love using them in heavy fog. Just send it down the sound bearing to target...wait....BOOM!

Acoustic torps are wonderful!
Just killed another escort with it.
September 1943, off the coast near Halifax.
Convoy sighted despite bad visiblity.....as I was picking off merchants one by one I saw a dd coming up right behind me, about 1 km away.....
LOS!, out goes acoustic torp.... a true fire and forget weapon.... a couple of minutes later....BOOM! no more escort!
Gotta love 'em.
But remember two things.....
1) target needs two move ar 12 knts minimum in order to be picked up by the sensor.
2) If you happen to be the noisiest vessel around the torp is coming back for you!
I believe it was standard practice among U-boats to dive 60 mtrs or deeper after firing such a torp!
Finally:I think an acoustic torp is a bad investment: they cost about 250, I believe the amount of renown for sunk DD is less...
I still 'buy' one sometimes just for the fun of it...

Well look at it this way, not as an investment to gain renown for a DD, but renown just by living through the patrol. :know:

When are acoustic eels available? And on all uB types?

I swear by 'em.

Sneak up, get a quartering shot on the escort so the fish can hear it.

Motor off opposite: when it hits, his buddy is gonna come looking.

Rinse, repeat, all around the convoy, then "Guns Up!!"

Bad weather? Make your best aproach and pick off 1-2, then stay
in contact- if any of the buggers gets too close, let 'em have one.

THEN get low fast- if not, keep on los'in!

EDIT: Von, the Falke, Zaunkonig I and Zaunkonig II are passive acoustic homers. Falke comes in around....'43? And the Zaun's come in after late '44

DOnt you guys think that the homing torps are a bit to efective to be realistic?

The game doesn't model the counter-measures employed by the allies, which doesn't help.

according to what I've read around, YES.

some hitorical readings I've made speak of a 25% rate of succesful hits. in my campaigns I believe to be around 90%.

on the other hand, for many reasons in the game you don't get to shoot so many of them.. I usuallly have it loaded in tube 5, so in the best case I can shoot one per patrol.

I always keep at least 2-3 available fpr escorts...1 up front and 2 to the rear

Ditto.

Acoustic and pattern torps are different. Completely. Acoustic are mainly for escorts that have detected you and are closing for depth-charge attacks, and pattern are for anything else; including escorts that have not detected you.
