Hello Wratt.

Will you continue with this thread some day? Or are your No-TC-days over? Or will you continue only in autumn when it turns cooler again, as mentioned in the post above?

Always enjoyed reading your journal a lot!

Cheers

Kai Ahoy, Thanks for asking. I am part way into U-49’s 9th patrol, I have been using some TC to close the gap from the base to my patrol grid AN53or AM53 I have to check that when I resume later. I am still in the middle of the Nord Sea and I hope to get past the Scappa flow area tonight.

 The only eventful part so far was leaving port, soon as the game started I went on deck and the escort Armed Trawler was firing its deck gun. I did not see any enemy ships or bees so I guess it was our salute.

 Also there were two sunken ships that were burning a little further out into the harbor. We also sailed past two Hipper class ships, as well as an S-boot.

 This patrol I enabled the free cam but I forgot to enable the event cam. But what I did not know was there was a “ships cam” , that gives you the view from the nearest ship. I followed the S-boot and I wish they coded the warships for online play. I think this game would have been gute online if it were U-boots fighting human sailed warships.

 I guess that if we survive this patrol then I would do the next with out using TC, and I would then have the time to type up a Ktb log. Maybe when this patrol is done I will type up an after action report.
 Have a gute hunt and keep yer boat a float! <Wrratt

Hey Wrratt, did you know that you've made it into print?

The latest issue of PC Gamer (UK) has a box-out about your first no-TC patrol.

 Ahoy, thank you very much for posting the image, I would have missed seeing it. That’s cool too that they mentioned subsim, I would have played the game with no TC but having some place to chat and to place my Bdu reports was entirely due to Neal taking time to host this site. So I thank you sincerely.

 Too bad about the name being missed spelled, I would have liked the Quake 2 players to have seem my name, oh well.

 U-49 has been in dry dock, this summer its been way to hot, but come the cooler weather in a few weeks, and U-49 will resume patrols. I am anxious to hear the diesels, and to hunt down some tonnage.

 Have a gute day and a better night. <Wrratt

Im also doing a 1x campaign as well on my second computer, on my first i playing normal with rub and commander, but on the 1x it just straight SH3 with the 1.4 patch and no mods. Theres nothing crazy about playing this way its what we call True Realism. Not even the RUB mod players that play the game normal can beat that.

From "Das Boot", Cassell Paperback Edition (1999), English translation; page 258:

“No one at home will believe it,” the Chief remarks. “They simply can’t imagine it. On our next leave we ought to invent a U-boat game. Go without shaving or washing for months. No change of linen, into bed with boots and stinking leather clothes on. Brace your knee against the table while eating, and instead of serving spinach on a plate, plop it down on the table top…”
The Chief gulps a couple of mouthfuls and goes on elaborating his plan. “And if the telephone rings, yell ‘Alarm!’ like a madman, knock over the table, and rush for the door like greased lightning.”

Has it gone this far yet?

Great stuff wrratt!! I seen the article in PCGamer and came here to read your acounts. I`m not all the way through yet but what i have read so far is great. Just like reading a good book.

And i thought an online freind and I were hardcore for flying beech barons around the world in real time in FS2002/FS2004. (on/off playing over a period of 14 or so months.)

Again, great job wrratt!

 Ahoy, Farside, thanks for the good wish, as a skipper it is always gute to have luck on your side. Hail and victory to you< kiwi_2005 best of luck and happy hunting on your patrol!. Kpt.Lehmann, I don’t mind the negative stuff too much, I have dished out plenty of it myself at times .But I would be lying if I did not say that I prefer your type of comment. I am glad you or anyone else has enjoyed seeing what U-49 was doing….. redstorm101 and vienna, I did not add red bulbs to lamps or hang food stores from the ceiling. But I did increase the amount of fish I ate. While doing the sailing, I would eat fish at least four out of seven days. Mostly fish imported from Germany. Crazy_CanuckWelcome aboard subsim, this is a very gute site with some friendly and helpful posters. Thanks for the kind words too, it is certainly nice to read that you have enjoyed checking out the Bdu logs, so far. And since you have done real time flying, you might like SH3, it has a pace and tempo all its own. The lulls make the hunting, just that much more thrilling. I would recommend the game, even with its low resolution and no war time recreation feel, out of the box the game is a bit plain, but with a few mods, it is more well rounded.

 But if you want a great , make that a frikken great game buy, Chronicles of Riddick. I have been playing it for a week now and it is the most fun I have had playing a game since Far Cry. COR has got to be one the best game out right now,and it is over a year old too I think. I picked up a UK DVD-ROM import for 15U.S. Dollars from gogamer. I never heard of it but for 15 bucks I thought I would take a chance, best 15 dollars I have spent on a game in a long time! It is not just the killer sonic and hyper realistic image quality that is impressive. The game play over the past seven days has been top of the line. It is a game with countless small details, balanced and engaging game play, plus it is fun! Well as we say in Butchers Bay, “got any smokes?” ….Have a gute sail if you are a skipper, or gute getta away if you are in Butchers Bay < Wrratt

You mean "Escape from Butchers Bay", right? It is a fun game, though I disliked how they changed the way Riddick got his "eye shine". All those cigarette packs collected for nuthin'....

Wraatt, I enjoyed reading about your exploits in PC Gamer, but even more I have enjoyed reading your logs here.

I, too, like to 'personalize' my AI shipmates. I am concerned about Johan, for instance. He is, by now, a highly decorated officer and deserves his own command. He hasn't said anything to me, but sometimes there is a certain unsettling look in his eyes, as if he were wishing for something more.

But as the U-48 is my first command, I am secretly afraid to carry on patrolling without Johan's infatiguable, strong presence at the weapons station. I know it isn't fair, but I think I'm going to keep him there as long as BDU will let me ....

Wrratt you inspired me to get this game after seeing the article in PC gamer. Tell me a few things.
Where do you get this expansion pack?
You're not on 100% realism, are you?
And do you leave the game running 24/7?
What do your friends think of this?

If you answered any of these questions already, sorry, I just copied and pasted everything youve written in this thread to a word file and it came out to 123 pages. Xcuse me if I dont read it all. ;)

I don't know if this is the case on all systems, or if some mods do something about it, but I've found that even at x1 TC a game minute is still shorter than a real minute - by as much as 9-12 seconds, as I recall.

Now that i've got the hang of manually firing and what not, this thread has inspired me to do a non-compression, 100% realism, IIA boats-only campaign next. :D

Log Update Jan 17 1940,,,U-49 is glad to report grid AN47 is deviod of any shipping. We patroled our grid for over 28 hours and all was clear. How delightful the cruise has been its now over three full days sailing, and not one sighting. We are heading south towards the Channel, and hopefully I can still recall how to use the periscope and TDC....Ahoy....Wrratt ................................well I have to say running the game without TC is like having an interactive "screensaver" running....go outside garden for a hour or so, check the game....eat dinner and shower, check the game...I think it is safe to say this mission will be going on for more then one week, unless we are sunk or come across 14 ships in the next four days! Happy Hunting and Keep yer decks awash![/list]

Respect sir!!!!! Tried something similar once upon a time but ended after around 46 hrs with the damn antivirus programme kicking in automatically making SHIII crash. :damn: keep a crate of "Becks" as standard eq at home nowdays..... :)

It is trully a feat to be admired  .... Really something that normal people in their ignorance just wont understand... to have the intelligence or mental capacitiy -the imagination potential if you will- to consiously choose to inmerse yourself in a world of fantasy and make it as real as your own.

As Spock once said "the more complex the mind, the greater the necesity for the simplicity of play"... also reminds me of a video game console tv ad that I saw recently, where the guy has an "alter ego - personality" as a luchador-masked-pro wrestler, and says "Becuase one life is simply not enough for me"... but man, this guy is the real deal!!

It also reminds me of a group of online gamers that I read about in the book "Dungeons and Dreamers, the rise of computer game culture, from geek to chic" by Brad King and John Borland who took their gaming experience to a new level completely unexpected by the game developers when they chose to start their own play theater within the game world, using their online characters, and they succesfully managed to present "live" clasic plays of shakespeare and such. I don't want to highjack the thread so i won't go anymore into this.

Anyway... my salute to you... I think I'll make an effort to buy a really hot portable computer to try this myself sometime.

P.S.: By the way, if anyone out there thinks that doing something this hardcore is really silly, stupid or indicative of not having a life, let me say that I find more meaning and significance in what this man has done than the standard "going out to the same pub every weekend" drill that the plebes do for their whole lifes!!!

ROCK ON  !!!!
