You need to go to C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Documents\SH4\data\cfg\SaveGames\ and find the save game you wish to edit.

There are two files you need to edit.

One is Careertrack.upc just open it up with notepad and do a search for you boat's current name, then change it to the name of your choice. The other file you need is ActiveUserPlayerUnits.UPC

ActiveUserPlayerUnits.UPC looks a little like this

[UserPlayerUnit 1]
ID=Porpoise
NameDisplayable=Porpoise
UnitName=USS Perch <<< rename the sub here. If you look around, you can change the names of the crew of your sub as well.

There's another folder called UPCInitial .Open this and you'll find files of the same name. Change these also if you dont have a UPCInitial folder in the saved game folder.

Best to set these files to read-only because SH4 has a habit of undoing your changes. once you save ingame you don't have to worry about renaming it again. unless you make a new career

If you install Kim Ronhof's tool correctly you can easily change the boat name & many other things.

(from memory):

You can change the names of all the subs in a file (I donīt remember it); and all your Gatos will be "Silversides", or all the Balaos will be "Pampanito". There is a thread in this forum about this question (I didnīt find it yet). The game selects the name between all the names in that file, if you put the name of the sub in all the entries, the sub will have ever the same name and number.

I use only Gato Class submarines in campaigns, and ever I have the SS-236 USS Silversides.

EDIT:

In the file: Your SH4 folder\Data\Roster\American\Submarine\SSBalao.cfg (for example).

You have the names of all the Balao Fleet.

Now, you like Pampanito, then replace all the entries in this way:

[UnitClass]
ClassName=SSBalao
UnitType=200
AppearanceDate=19430101
DisappearanceDate=19750612
DisplayName=US Balao

[Texture 1]
TextureName=data/Submarine/NSS_Balao/NSS_Balao_T01.tga
LightmapTextureName=data/Submarine/NSS_Balao/NSS_Balao_O01.tga
StartDate=19380101
EndDate=19440504
Frequency=1

[Texture 2]
TextureName=data/Submarine/NSS_Balao/NSS_Balao_T02.tga
LightmapTextureName=data/Submarine/NSS_Balao/NSS_Balao_O01.tga
StartDate=19440505
EndDate=19990711
Frequency=1

[Unit 1]
Name=USS Balao (SS-285) -----------------> change by USS Pampanito (and the number)
DOC=19430101
DOD=19460820

[Unit 2]
Name=USS Seahorse (SS-304) -----------------> change by USS Pampanito (and the number)
DOC=19430101
DOD=19460302

[Unit 3]
Name=USS Skate (SS-305)----------------------> change by USS Pampanito (and the number)
DOC=19430101
DOD=19461021

[Unit 4]
Name=USS Billfish (SS-286) ----------------------> change by USS Pampanito (and the number)
DOC=19430101
DOD=19461101

................(continue with all the boats)......

Also you can change the dates: DOC (comissioned); DOD (decomissed).

Another way is delete all the entries with the names you donīt like, leaving only those you prefer, and write [Unit 1] as first line of the entry.

My file edited for Gato Class USS Silversides:

[UnitClass]
ClassName=SSGato
UnitType=200
AppearanceDate=19411101
DisappearanceDate=19721015
DisplayName=US Gato

[Texture 1]
TextureName=data/Submarine/NSS_Gato/NSS_Gato_T01.tga
LightmapTextureName=data/Submarine/NSS_Gato/NSS_Gato_O01.tga
StartDate=19411231
EndDate=19421231
Frequency=1

[Texture 2]
TextureName=data/Submarine/NSS_Gato/NSS_Gato_T02.tga
LightmapTextureName=data/Submarine/NSS_Gato/NSS_Gato_O01.tga
StartDate=19430101
EndDate=19601231
Frequency=1

[Unit 1]
Name=USS Silversides (SS-236)
DOC=19411215
DOD=19460417

;************ The End ************

And I have USS Silversides EVER I start a new campaign with a Gato Class, and in single missions and patrols.

Of course, BACKUP of the file before the changes...

ONLY WORKS STARTING A NEW CAMPAIGN. But in missions and patrols you will have the desired name.

Regards.
