It's been a while since I did the last one... This time I'll try and do a proper one with characters and a plot and such. I may improvise along the way but it'll be for the good of the story IMHO.

Something to do with a court martial... :hmmm:

NO Court Martial...NO Military Police...Just World War Two...

Just me, my crew, and the target-rich Pacific Ocean...

*I know war diaries weren't kept...but it' seems to be a good format for a story like this. It's possible I might do letters at some point. Depends what I feel like. This is my first real AAR. I've done a couple informal ones but here we go....

Let us begin:

June 11th, 1942

It's time for the story of the Captain of the S-47. Frank Eversmann.

*War Diary Entry #1

I got my orders. I'm to report to the S-47...an old pig boat. Just what I wanted. At least we're stationed in Brisbane. Maybe I'll pick up a nice Aussie girl.

I've got a green crew but hopefully we're going to change that. I need to whip these boys into shape. We haven't had much time to prepare, however, and they are sending us up North a ways...

http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/2351/28jf.jpg

This morning I flipped through my Bible a bit. I can't say i'm not nervous. There's rumors going around that after Midway, the Japs are planning another attack. It feels like I should be there to sink the troop carriers...but another part of me is scared. More scared of the unknown than the Japs I think. I still don't know. Time will tell...

It's time to leave...

Interesting. I look forward to seeing more of this. Oh and what mods are you using?

*Trigger Maru Overhauled v2.5
*Run Silent Run Deep Campaign Mod v502
*Traveller's Mod v2.06
*TMO Cam for Traveller's Mod (Edited the speed of the Camera view in TM because it was stupid fast)
*SH4 Authentic Flags Mod
*Less Plankton v1.2 (For clearer underwater screenies)
*Improved Stock Environment v3 TMO+RFB
*New Narwhal v1.85

Also, I added the theme of Pacific Aces from SH2 to be the menu theme for SH4...but that doesn't affect gameplay.

Glad to see the interest. I'm playing through the patrol right now and preparing another post...if you don't see one in the next 2 hours, there'll be one early in the morning.

If this goes well, I may do some for some other sims.

Thanks and good luck. Hope you get lucky enough to have a patrol at Guadalcanal that puts you off Savo on November 12/13/14.

War Diary #2

--------------------------------------------

June 13th 1942

It's different....being out on a real patrol. It's different than training. The flatness and isolation of the ocean just hit me like a ton of bricks when I was looking through the TBT today...

http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/1497/f1mo.jpg

The dives seem more real and that every one could bring us closer to death. This boat is old, but I think she'll hold.

I've been running the crew all around. They're eager...but still green. I haven't quite learned everybody's name yet. I haven't been around to all the compartments and gotten to know them yet. For most, this is also their first patrol. I've met my Officers but I don't really know them yet.

Today I was reading the charts over the shoulder of the man who was working with it and this ol' Pigboat is slower than I anticipated. I just want to get there and do my job. I'm not a big fan of all this waiting around. I don't have much choice though. It's my job, and I volunteered for this. I have to lead these men whether they (or I) like it or not.

http://img802.imageshack.us/img802/825/vedb.jpg

I just feel too rushed. I've been awake most of the time because the anticipation keeps me up. I can't sleep because I fear something bad will happen.

June 14th 1942

I couldn't sleep last night....I really should get some sleep. After I went through and checked the readiness of the compartments (again...), I spent some time with an enlisted man I became friends with on deck. This is his first patrol too. He's scared too. I didn't let on that I was because obviously...the Captain can't be scared. He's not allowed to be scared. I had to lean on the rail because I started to get sleepy. Honestly, I don't remember much of that conversation. After a while, I decided it was time to sleep. I had to. I couldn't keep going on like this. I have to stay effective or why are we out here?

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/6568/7wcw.jpg

June 14th 1942

I ended up sleeping for a few hours more than I planned...but I feel better. I didn't say much with anybody on this watch since I don't know anybody other than the Officers. I can tell they want to get into the action soon.

Went up on deck...at night. I like standing up here at night. It's peaceful and calming. I stand up here and think of home... I'm not married and none of the girls back home ever showed me any attention. I never knew why...but it seems like they just didn't want me around. They went after the cooler, tougher guys. I have a dog though. A nice Beagle....I love that dog to death. I'd have taken him with me if they allowed dogs here. Good ol' Sam...best dog i'll ever have.

http://imageshack.us/a/img841/6287/00j5.jpg

I like coming up here and thinking of home. I don't see the harm in it if I check down below every once in a while. There are ways of easily contacting me but I don't think anything major will happen externally without me knowing.

I'm from Jackson, Mississippi originally but my family moved to Missouri (*Author's Note: Had to throw that in there) when I was 10. We had some old family and friends up in the Ozarks that told us about some work that became available. So me, Dad, Mom, and my sister Jennifer moved up there. I got Sam while living up there. Some neighbors a few miles down the road had puppies and were giving them away. Dad always said a boy needs a good dog.

June 15th 1942

Decided to take the crew through some drills today...Sent them to battlestations and performed a Crash Dive.... It wasn't perfect but we got the job done in a passable time. I'm actually surprised that this crew performed this well. It gave me a good boost of confidence. I think we'll do alright if we keep improving like this.

http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/7473/eyct.jpg

The actual dive made me a bit nervous...but once again, the ol' pig held together. I'm starting to get into the swing of things around here, as are some of the crew. I spoke with my friend up on watch again today. I know there's always been that talk about how Officers are superior to Enlisted men. I believe that's the way the customs and courtesies should be, but when we're out here doing our jobs....I consider everybody equal. I want the men to know that they have my ear when they have something they believe is important. However, that doesn't mean they can come complain because the Chief yells too much or that the food isn't good enough. I'll listen to them...but within reason.

Anyway...the rest of the practice dive went well. Surfacing is always fun. So I got to enjoy that once again.

Mabye it'll have a twist where he discovers his confidence and overcomes the struggle...

Maybe I'll throw in some other things...

We'll just have to wait and see.

I tried to make him come across as a nervous regular guy who was never done much with his life except excel in his schoolwork.

I guess we'll have to wait for installment #3. This might be relatively long because of the speed of the S-boat and how much time I have. I'm shooting for at least 3 patrols.

-Note- During this patrol, I actually DID run out of fuel and had to reload a save from earlier. It would've been finished earlier, but I had to do it over up to that point.

War Diary #3

June 19th 1942

http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/6231/7p3h.jpg

We've been doing nothing but drill for the past 4 days.

http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/6063/ah3z.jpg

I want my crew to perform well. I want to survive this war and so do all the other men on this boat. After the 2nd Watch ended today, I decided to go get some sleep. I only got around 3 hours of sleep because my Executive Officer woke me up to tell me we'd be entering enemy waters soon.

We're going to pass by the Solomon Island chain on our way North. I hope all goes well here. I'm confident in my crew by now. We've done enough drilling to convince me that these men are ready to meet the challenge of the unknown. However, that doesn't mean we should stop drilling. We need to keep getting better. Especially now that we're headed into the enemy's territory.

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/1473/up4u.jpg

Tonight I'll probably be up top again if nothing goes wrong today. I'm surprised that nothing has broken on this boat. We haven't been gone long but some of these ol' S boats are stubborn, fragile little things. I just wish they provided a better quality of life. It's so hot inside this thing. All the time. The heat never lets up here in the South Pacific. I'm used to a Midwestern climate. I thought it got hot there. I'd really appreciate a Missouri Summer right now.

June 19th 1942

Well...so much for nothing breaking. During one of our drills, a pipe burst behind me in the control room. I had the maintenance crew fix it up as best they can. It wasn't a big thing. The pipe wasn't destroyed and they were able to patch it up. At the time, I thought the hull had sprung a leak...but then I saw that it was just a pipe. I saw that some of the other newer guys were startled by it. We weren't even that deep. Maybe it was just that pipe's turn to go. Who knows when that was last fixed?

http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/5544/srg2.jpg

I'm standing up top watching the gun crews practice readying their weapons in the dark. I hope we won't have to use these. I figured I'd run them in the dark so they'll be able to do it flawlessly in day or nighttime in the event that we can't dive. The moon is out again...I'm fairly confident that we'd be hard to spot out here. The ocean has been calm since we left Brisbane but when we're running like this, I think we'll be alright.

http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/64/icxv.jpg

I spoke to my friend I made on watch last week for the first time in a few days. Dave King is his name. I've gotten to know the crew a lot over the past few days. I've also learned that it may not be possible to know every man personally along with managing a ship. I'll try to at least know my command room crew and the senior man in each compartment by name. It didn't take long for me to figure out how hot it is inside here so I let the men dress informally. When we're out here at sea with no Admirals around, I don't care how we dress as long as we can effectively do our jobs.

I have to say that some of my uneasiness that I felt in the first few days is gone. I'm doing better and I'm able to even get some sleep.

The S-47 will not go this patrol without sinking an enemy ship. I'll see to it that we get our shots in. I'm not returning to Brisbane without any kills.

June 21st 1942

Phew...this is the first time in two days that I've been free. Yesterday, the watch crew spotted two Jap planes coming out of the clouds. This is for real now. I ordered a Crash Dive and was once again satisfied with the way my crew performed. It felt good. I'm really starting to fit into this life I think. I finally found something I can do. I wonder how those guys back home would see me now?

Japanese Aircraft dive towards S-47's last known position

http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/9594/59s3.jpg

But all day....ALL DAY...we ran underwater. It got so hot and stuffy in here. Unbelievable. I know that there are more....many more days like this in my future. I'm up to the challenge...but man, I really don't like the climate in this boat.

http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/2280/09gm.jpg

I hear that those new Fleet Boats are nice. Every man has a bunk to himself and I heard something about showers. I even heard one Officer talk about an Ice Cream machine the crew maintained.

I should try and get one. But, it's so hot in here...the ice cream would probably melt as soon as we could crank it out. Oh well. Some day....

Anyway, I'm glad that deal with the planes is over. I came up top when we surfaced and the hot, humid air up above was very much welcomed by the men on watch.

Enough for now, the radarman just reported a new contact.

War Diary#4

July 4th 1942

It's been up and down...quite literally....for the past while now. We're currently passing by a Japanese held island chain named Palau. It's out of visual range...but the charts say it's there.

There have been so many planes out here lately. It's second nature for the crew to perform a crash dive now. We've done it so much. There have been no hints to any ships passing.

At least we haven't seen any planes at all today. It's almost like the Japs stopped just for the 4th. It's gray, cloudy skies though. That may have something to do with it.

http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/5786/mlo9.jpg

I don't care...this is some well needed rest.

July 5th, 1942

FLASH TRAFFIC 0056
July 5th, 1942

From: SUBPAC N2
To: Forces Afloat

IJN Task Group departed Truk and en route to Rabaul...

Dammit. We passed by Rabaul a long time ago....if only we had that prep time I wanted before the patrol. We'd have left later and probably caught this Task Group on it's way... But we've been long gone from the Rabaul area for a while now.

July 7th 1942

http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/4364/73l4.jpg

It...is...raining. On the only day I have time for another trip up top...

Great...just great. I was really needing a break for fresh air. We've been out in open ocean for a while. It's almost a straight shot from here to the Patrol Zone. I've been helping out around the boat. Got to know my XO pretty well. His name is Joe Wright. It's pretty much been just a professional relationship up until now. We haven't had much of a chance to become friends yet. He's been on two patrols that were based out of the Philippines. His weren't as long because it didn't take them long to find action in the South China Sea. He's from Chicago, Illinois. He's got a girl back home that he wants to marry when he gets back to the states. I've got one thing he doesn't though...a good dog. Otherwise, he's had a relatively normal life. He excelled in school just as I did. He doesn't seem to have any bad feelings toward me at all even though I basically just came in here and stole his Command right out from under his nose.

I like Joe though. He's a good guy to have around and damn dependable in an emergency situation. I can't tell him that though because he'd get a big head. I'll save it for when I get back to the states and go visit him sometime after the war. I guess I get to spend my free time here writing on my bunk since it's pouring rain outside.

I wish we could send mail back and forth here. I sometimes wonder how home is. The only mail I get here is from SUBPAC. I've made the best of this though. I actually enjoy being out here and sailing the seas in my submarine. Sure beats sitting in a dirty foxhole somewhere on one of these islands with a rifle. They have to put up with the heat AND rain AND Jap troops...and bullets...and bombs.

I just think this is a better life. I'm at home here.

More later.

July 10th 1942

We've reached the patrol zone. Orders say we have to stay on-station for at least 72 hours.

I'm thinking of taking a route through the South China Sea on the way back if we don't get any luck here. The SCS is supposedly full of Japs.

I want to sink a ship as much as the next guy here...but I don't want to do anything that will put my boat at a greater risk than it has to be.

July 13th 1942

We did it! We sank a ship!

There is not a man on my boat right now who is not proud. It felt great.

A watchman reported a visual contact bearing 349

http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/6721/9did.jpg

I called the ship to battle stations. This was the real deal.

http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/3081/02ej.jpg

It was time. We dove to periscope depth and I studied the plot. We would have to get within range.

http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/6779/ydh1.jpg

This old boat also comes with old torpedoes. The maximum range on these babies is around 3500 yards. The data was programmed in and we did the job.

http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/9389/wn52.jpg

I'm very proud of this boat. I keep saying that and I can't stop.

http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/1732/mhnx.jpg

Right now, we feel like we could take on anything.

We will have to party when we get back to Brisbane. I've decided not to take the route through the South China Sea. We'll just come back the way we came.

I think we may be a little late getting back to port...but this was worth it. After not seeing a hint of anything for weeks and weeks... Our time on-station is about to expire and we'll start heading back home.

July 17th 1942

Wow...this is nerve wracking.

Battery power has been expended. We haven't had enough time for a recharge and radar picks up some Jap planes headed for us.

I ordered a shallow dive...deep enough that they can't see us from the air but shallow enough that we won't have a lot of problems. All we can do now is wait...

July 20th 1942

Sonar picked up a new contact today while dodging planes. I ordered periscope depth and saw a merchant sailing away from us at high speed.

It was a big one but there's no way we'd have been able to catch it in this boat. We have no choice to pass it up. The men are disappointed...but they know this was the right choice. I've found this crew very cooperative and easy to work with.

July 23rd 1942

The gun crew got to go to work today and have some fun.

We came up on a wounded merchant sailing all alone. It was evening and we were close enough so I decided to finish it off with the deck gun.

We went on over and the men on the gun crew performed well.

The shots went out over and over until there was a big explosion...one of the most impressive I've seen in my life...and the ship sank by the stern.

Looks like the crew of the S-47 score another one for Uncle Sam

http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/7936/7voy.jpg

http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/3605/67ml.jpg

There were some poor men in the boat. We were so far from land there was no way they'd survive. I can't do a thing about it.

July 26th 1942

We're low on fuel. We're close to home...almost to the turn to take us down past the Solomons into the Coral Sea.

We can do this. The crew will perform I know....but the equipment can't fail us here. If we run out of fuel out here, I can't even imagine how bad it would be.

It's time to conserve fuel. We're going to be late getting back but at least this ol' piece of crap will get us home.

I had a chance to talk to Dave again today. He invited me to play a game of hearts with some of the Enlisted men. He didn't tell me they were good! They completely swept me and then turned to each other like cannibals who have run out of normal people to eat. Even though we're in enemy waters, it's nice to relieve stress with some of the men.

From what I hear, I'm quite popular with the men. Joe tells me that the men who have been on patrols before haven't had a skipper quite like me. He says it in a good way. Overall, I'm happy with this patrol. We aren't home yet and it felt good and clean. The more experienced men on the boat have said similar things. My navigator told me today that if we had taken the route through the South China Sea, we would've run out of fuel for sure. I will say that's a bit of a close call. I was really close to sending us that way.

I'm glad I didn't.

August 2nd 1942

Close call today with some Jap planes. Now that I look back, we should've been more careful. Some Jap planes suddenly popped up on radar at very close range. About that time, the watch spotted two G4M bombers coming right for us. I ordered a dive and cleared the area as I've done with every plane all the way from the Solomons past Palau to Luzon. Jap Patrols are making life very monotonous. And of course, there's always something that needs fixing on this old pig.

http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/5688/55ko.jpg

I know I've got a lot to learn yet...but I don't feel nervous anymore. I don't have any fears of the unknown because I've been there. I just don't want to experience depth charges. Or any other form of Anti-Submarine Warfare.

There's been times where the planes almost get the best of us and they've even fired at us a couple times in the past few days.

My crew is relaxing a little bit because we're so close to home. I was saying for days that we still need to be alert. That we still aren't out of the woods yet.

We can still die this close to home. I was actually right in the middle of telling the sonarman this when the radarman reported the G4M's.

http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/7249/j798.jpg

Sonar was getting lazy and goofing off at his post.

S-47 dodging Jap planes

http://img542.imageshack.us/img542/8284/0gfs.jpg

August 6th 1942

We're out of enemy waters and into the buffer zone between the two...if you could classify that.

I have more time to think now that we're not constantly on edge like we were at Luzon. I just remembered my birthday is coming up on the 10th. I almost forgot my birthday...How bad is that? Thoughts of home are starting to come back and news will be nice. All the men are very eager to get back to port.

You know what the best part is? We'll get to put the ol' broomstick up. I'm very excited to show it off.

Also, the fishing is pretty good here. I've allowed a small fishing detail so we can get some variety in the food we eat. I'm sick of the same old crap every day.

But for now, I have to take all those thoughts of the past and future and put them in a box and lock them away. I have to get all these boys home.

August 11th 1942

Hell of a birthday present...reaching the continental shelf of Australia (Author's Note I'm not sure what it's actually called for Australia...but I'll just call it this) We're within 100 nautical miles of Australia.

http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/8671/9ld8.jpg

Sea is a bit rougher than it was when we left...

http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/4665/8vq0.jpg

.....but I allowed the men to celebrate. They fired off the deck gun in a late 4th of July celebration and we enjoyed music on the gramophone all day. The men are very happy to be coming home at last.

http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/8425/ov25.jpg

Some...like me...are having trouble accepting that it's over. Our first patrol is over. I've been shut up in a floating steel tube for 2 months on this day. I'm ready to stand on dry land...but it seems so far away even though we're so close.

I feel as if this patrol was too easy or we were very lucky. I think it's a little bit of both...but I'm just happy to get back. Maybe we'll get some time off in the States. Dave wants to get back home. He talks about it all the time. And Joe really wants to get married as soon as he can.

Me...I just want to see my family. Of course, that includes my beagle Sam.

If they don't ship us back, I'll find something to do around here.

Some friendly sights coming into the area as we head on towards Brisbane. There was an Aussie ship headin' the other way today

:haha: Running out of fuel was really not planned at all. I came to the turn to go down through the Solomons and I thought "Gee...I really don't have much fuel left...."

I just went where the story took me.

It might be a couple days before the next installment because I will be busy. Today, I worked 5 hours with 500-degree ovens... Tomorrow isn't looking great either.

Well...

Uh...

:rotfl2:

It's for the good of the story. I'll try and do a little part tomorrow that includes some time spent at Brisbane. That's if I have time.

This could be the interesting part me thinks, a night out in Brisbane with Rita :sunny:and some piccies of the ocassion as well would be more than welcome.

PS, on your next patrol try not to get you and the crew killed as I would like to see how this budding romance develops. :haha:

That's ok. When I was playing SHCE, my girlfriend looked a lot like a certain adult film star. It was purely a coincidence, I tell you!

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I already claimed Rita in one of my old sub stories, even though she ran off with my rich father while I was on patrol.....Maybe, she just gets around..

Letter From Home #1

-----

Now that our character is back to port, I might do a couple letters from home. They'll be pretty short compared to game posts.

-----

Dear Frank,

How have you been? Your Father and I have been worried sick. We started to wonder when you didn't write. We figured you were busy with Navy stuff. Your sister joined the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron in the Army. She flies airplanes from factories to airfields. You know her...always pushing the envelope. Your Dad is still working in the factory and I've gotten a job working at a restaurant in town. Don't worry about Sam either. He's just as healthy as he always was although he misses his daily game of fetch. We're all fine here and doing our part. Just make sure you do your part and come home to us safe and sound. We can't wait until you come home.

Love,

Mom

Dear Mom,

Don't worry about my safely, I can use saves as many times as I like and will never die. If we spot the enemy I dive deep until danger passes. I got a strange rash while in Brisbane and the Doc put me on antibiotics.

Sorry about the factory job, but it beats the last one you had.

I have to deliver some toilet paper to the Solomons, I'll try to write you from there.

Your son,
Red

Pains me to say that this is going to have to go on hold for possibly another week or two. There is too much going on, even on weekends, for me to continue at the moment.

Might do good to simulate the time between patrols. :shucks:
