Does anyone know what actually causes it and if so can someone make a patch that fixes it? I really like the mod but that stupid bug really kills it for me.(I know that I asked this question in the ATO forum but it's so devoid of people visiting it I figured that posting the question here would yield better results.)

For those of us who don't know, what exactly is the "conning tower bug"?

Basically every time you get a conning tower upgrade it causes a bug that the result of is a submarine that can't not move forward, or backward. A "Cannot comply" message is displayed instead. The crew screen also shows missing and empty slots as well.

You check your mod order and start a new career. Most of this is due to incorrect mod orders.

If you are suing Operation Monsoon your order should be as follows.

Generic Mod Enabler - v2.6.0.157
OpsMonsun_V705
OMv705_to_V720
OMv720_Patch5

(If you add OMEGU then the following TWO mods need to be in this order AFTER the above order is in the correct location.)

OMEGU_v300
OMEGU_v300_Patch7

So your first 5 mods should be in this order.

1. OpsMonsun_V705
2. OMv705_to_V720
3. OMv720_Patch5
4. OMEGU_v300
5. OMEGU_v300_Patch7

Once I re-read the documentation I found that it was my mod orders that caused the bug. Once I changed the order to what the DOCUMENTATION stated I had no more issues.

These mods orders are listed in the documentation and there is a warning of corruptions if they are not in the proper order.

No this bug has been seen before. Lurker knows about it even and it's just something he never fixed.

I have only seen it occur on the allied side of the game and only if TMO or RSRD was loaded.

So no one has any clue as to what causes this?

I got the bug for the first time last week. I started a new career after that date. One thing to do is load a previous game in hopes on not getting the upgrade.

I too have wondered at the cause and cure but there seems to be nothing as yet on where the bug may be. I am wondering if it is causing some sort of crew fatigue so the crew, "cannot comply" just as if they were all kept at battle stations to long and were too tired.

Yeah I remember when you posted that thread. I always thought it had something to do with the transfer of the conning towers from SH3 to SH4. Still if someone with modding experience and enough patience figured the problem out I would be eternally grateful to them.

You will get the new tower sooner or later. The only way to continue your career is to copy parts of the saved game file (containing rank, medal, tonnage sunk, crew) before the upgrade to a dummy file that matches the state of the boat as close as possible (i.e. you get the new tower in June 1941, so you start a new career in June 1941, save the game and use this file as transplant host. The Procedure has been described in detail in the ATO subforum).

Take a look at the crew screen when the tower upgrade has gone all wrong. Some slots are empty, some slots are missing. The crew is not sleeping, they have been blown into digital nirvana. Lurker assumed that the bug is caused by additional allied equipment accidentally built into the boat when the new tower is mounted (= parts of code for US equipment is loaded when it shouldn't).

Wouldn't that be easy to fix?

My upgrade bug did not happen until 1943

"The only way to continue your career is to copy parts of the saved game file before the upgrade to a dummy file..."

You will be constantly generating a dummy file since there is no speciifc date nor year the bug occurs. As with other upgrades the specific date or year is less as significent as the player stats. The upgrade may be available from 1941 on but the date a player may obtain it will vary.

Quote from lurker:

"9.Conning Towers / Turms

Unlike SH3, Turmumbau (Conning Towers) cannot be upgraded manually, but are coded to upgrade on certain dates within the *.upcge files. The only U-boats that are programmed for this upgrade are the Type VIIC, Type IXB and Type IXC. This is the schedule for the different subs

Type VIIC

Turmumbau I - 1940-07-30 to 1942-06-15
Turmumbau II - 1942-06-16 to 1943-12-10
Turmumbau III- 1943-12-11 to 1945-05-15

Type IXB

Turmumbau I - 1939-07-30 to 1942-08-18
Turmumbau II - 1942-08-19 to 1945-05-15

Type IXC

Turmumbau I - 1941-01-02 to 1943-02-15
Turmumbau III - 1943-02-16 to 1945-05-15

However you will have to earn this upgrade, there is a condition where you have to have had at least one patrol that was considered a good patrol."

So if you start your career before July 1940 and manage to get a decent patrol rating the first Turmumbau will take place August/September 1940, in any case before 1943. Been there, got the tower.

Sorry, but You do not get the idea behind the dummy routine: The bug will occur only after a conning tower upgrade. You will have to create three dummies if you want a "continuous" career from 39 to 45 involving the Typ VIIc, or two dummies for Typ IX.

Depending on the date the tower is awarded You will find more or less suitable starting dates for Your dummy career. In my case I gained 6 weeks worth of patrolling in 1942 (Turmumbau II) and lost 4 weeks in 1944 (Turmumbau III). Fair enough. I kept my rank, crew, sinkings (captains log), medals, and name (number) of my boat. The last dummy involved a change of flotilla (same home base) which I considered acceptable.

Apart from that: The new dummy boat will have equipment like snorkel, radar etc. that should have been awarded to the old boat before (because it was available and the Kaleun was successful enough). My guess is: The upgrade scheme in OM does not work at all.

The use of dummies and messing around with saved game files may not be ideal, yet it is the only way to make it to the end of war. If You really love playing OM (like I do, because apart from graphics it is in many aspects much better than SH5 with a myriad of mods), you will have to dummy (or fix OM and a lot of people will bow to you).

I don't know, but if You take a look at lurker's postings in the OM thread from the time when the bug emerged, it seems that it really enervated the modding master mind. Maybe the awareness of the equipment upgrade procedures being too hardcoded to adapt it has stopped the great lurker from modding on.
