Hi mates,

For the first time, I'll start to play on SH4.
Better late than never !
Is there any things I should know ?
Some things that I must absolutely do and not do ?

My game is already patched in 1.4 but no more at least.

Thanks in advance.

Yes. Don't run out of gas. There is no fly home for free button like there is in SH3. So keep an eye on that fuel gauge.

And if you do run out of gas while learning, there is always a game cheat until you get back at base. You do not have to start a new campaign or anything like that.

Go to Your Documents folder\SH4\Data\Cfg. Open up the gameplaysettings.cfg. Change LimitedFuel=true to LimitedFuel=false. Save file. Start game and get back to base.

Works for SH3 and SH5, too.

Do not leave crew on the MAIN DECK or GUNS when submerge during a depth charge attack. The crew are unprotected there because of a SH4 oversight.

And always remember to take your crew off Battle Stations when the battle is over. Otherwise, you'll be commanding a crew of sleep-deprived zombies after awhile.

You'll have lots of questions. Don't be afraid to ask. When you can, upgrade to 1.5, then add the supermods. You'll be glad you did.

Get the updated version 1.5 or Silent Hunter Gold, then load up one of the supermods.

The 1.5 it's a paid patch it seems ?
Where can I found it securely ? What downloading site you recommend ?*

Thanks to all to your fast answers !

Don't download it I made that mistake. Buy the gold edition disc and wait for it! apply 3 gig mem patch, load generic mod enabler into game file, load super mods. watch the vids in the how to section while you wait for yr disc. It's worth it

I'll say: give vanilla a try for a patrol or two, but after that do get one of the megamods. Trust me, the ones taht allow you to start and end a patrol at Midway instead of Pearl Harbor are big time-savers.

What most bugs me in SH4 (even if it is true to history) is that long "Pearl Harbor to East china sea" patrol trek which takes a lot of RL time (even with 3000x speed) and where almost nothing ever happens on the way.

Shortening this to a Midway-to-east-china-sea trek is a pretty no-nonsense thing (especially since if you play with limited fuel, you will basically always refuel at Midway on your way to Pearl anyways)

+1 to this.

Almost all the recent mods are made for this. If you get the "Gold Edition" on disc, this will save you time when something happens and you have to re-install.

Hi all and thanks again for every answer.

I want just ask a last Q: is it somewhere a FREE mod, addon or a patche for the original version of SH IV ??

Happy new year all.

The 'U-boat missions' was originally an expansion for the base game, I think.

Now, it will variously be found as a download 'patch', on disc, or in the 'Gold Edition', where v1.5 patch is integral to the game. That's the one I have, so I'm not sure what else might be available.

It is definitely NOT free. Most of us here have bought more than one version of the game, as we had to get the patched version after already buying an earlier one. Why any earlier versions are still sold is beyond me.

Earlier patches might be free from Ubisoft, but these would be worth very little, as you need v1.5 to really have a worthwhile game.

Okay, if I must pay to play, I'm going to the casino, not to Ubisoft.
I think I will forget SH4.
Thank you anyway mate.
