The USS Salmon was nearly destroyed on October 30, 1944 in an intense and accurate depth charging. The large tanker she damaged with two torpedoes(two others missed) was escorted by four Type C/D escort vessels which were first team, they damaged the Salmon severely, forcing her to the surface after sinking to 578 feet(test depth for that class is *250* feet.Nothing short of a miracle, Salmon battle surfaced her way to safety, killing multiple japanese on the deck of one of the escorts. The 10,000 tanker she hit with torpedoes and damaged, was slowed down by her hits and finished off by another sub later that night.

If you enjoyed that summary, you might like to read the original patrol report of that action. It's here: http://hnsa.org/doc/subreports.htm I find the "first-person" perspective of the patrol reports emphasizes the fact that this really happened.

Quite a report to read. Amazing that she surface and successfully fought her way free of FOUR Japanese destroyers. Coming to within 50 yards of one of them that SHE severely damaged during HER desperate attack.

Later, after winning free- she radioed for assistance, Answering her pleas for assistance, the submarines TRIGGER, SILVERSIDES and STERLET all responded and formed a protective ring around the SALMON and escorted her to safety.,, from within 100 miles of the Japanese coast!

This sounds like Traveller's "Emergency Sub" (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=3831) mod that he did.

It was a good idea. And this shows that at least in 1944 that such a concept was feasible, and quite real.

One of Salmon's antagonists in this epic action was the kaibokan, CD No. 22, believed to be responsible for the sinking of Sam Dealy's famous sub Harder in the previous August.

A little payback anyway.

Well, I managed to set it up pretty well in the RSRD campaign. Large Tanker with four Type C escorts...tanker and escorts are set to ELITE. They have killed me twice now in Salmon Class(actually was assigned USS Salmon) in two different careers in October 1944. First time they got a lucky chargethat landed ON the bridge and exploded, hull damage shot to 80, then being I was 100 foot below test depth, hull collapsed. Second time I managed to get away with minor damage, decoys were life savers, at 350 feet.Surfaced, pulled ahead, tanker was hit by three torpedoes so listing making slow speed, was closing submerged again about four hours later, was at 200 feet, TDC showed them drawing away, so I sped up to 6 knots, made too much noise, in came escorts, decoys helped but one snuck up on me, made a run, those Type C's are brutal with the charges, one slide down the side of the stern, ride under the prop shafts and exploded, the other seconds later exploded below control room, it was all over.

Thinking I will release this as a single mission, any takers?
