I added the heavy cruiser Ashigara to RSRD , with timing and location down that makes the action of June 8, 1945 possible. For those who do no know, the HMS Trenchant braved mined, shallow waters of Bangka Straits following an ULTRA to ambush the heavy cruiser Ashigara which was en route to Singapore from Batavia, Java carrying 1,400 troops for defense of Singapore and was escorted by the Destroyer Kamikaze.Shortly after noon Trenchant fired 8 torpedoes from 4,000 yards(close as could get) , five hit, sinking the cruiser. The DD dropping depth charges but never came close, lucky for the sub as the waters are a bit shallow.

Testing to make sure all is well, my career in late war happened to have me out of Subic Bay with Balao class USS Pintado.Departed for third patrol on 28 May 1945.After arrivign in area and sinking an aux subchaser, avoiding a few planes, boredom was sitting in when an ULTRA informed us of the Ashigara's transit. On the evening of the 7th we slipped into the shallow waters and fortunately the straits(historical location of attack and sinking) has about 100 feet of depth. We patroled submerged at dawn, ignoring a small coastal convoy waiting for the big boy.At 1147, sound had contact, could see the large cruiser via the scope soon after.Went to general quarters. Due to the random radius, they were a bit off in left field, so i had to close submarged on a clear day in calm seas, we ran in at 8 knots, then down to 6 as we closed. Finally, firing position at 3,950 yards.Six Mark 16 torpedoes were fired(yes not historical but love to use them 4 months of war) and we turned away, ready to use stern tubes with Mark 18 and Mark 27 cuties in case DD came our way.The Mark 16's hit with devastating effect, five of six hit, the cruisers exploded into a giant fireball, magazines mustve been hit. The DD scrolled around fast but never made contact, tried firing a cutie but it couldnt catch the fast circling DD.We slipped away, one cruiser down.
