OK guys
Patrol 2 photo recon of Tsursaki harbor-date feb 42.
Is this a suicide mission or is there a chance of success. Is there any chance of getting through Bungo straights and out again without being detected,or should i leave well alone and patrol somewhere else?(dont want to lose my new command on 2nd mission).

Good hunting

It's doable...

Just don't get close to any vessel and run silent until you pass the Strait, after that you have to find you're route in.

I got a mission to recon Hiroshima harbour which I thought was going to be a nightmare, but it turned out not to be that bad - didn't get pinged in the Bungo straits, which was a pleasant surprise. I'd have a look, you can always abort if it looks too hairy

I will have a go at it(you know the old silent hunter saying-"be more aggressive".It could take a few hours in reatime but i dont think using TC is a good idea. Will post again when i am sunk or hopefully back out.

Whatever you do don't get greedy and attack the small freighter accompanied by a destroyer or sub chaser. That "freighter" is an "expert" anti-sub ship, equipped with active sonar, depth charges, and multiple deck guns. The escort will be the least of your worries if the "freighter" gets on to you. Good luck! :salute:

Oh well, got sunk after all, going to have to get a new boat.At least my abysmal performance was kept off the record.I think it was the freighter and destroyer mentioned by torpedobait that got me although did not attack them, came straight for me so must have made a mistake somewhere.I wont be in too much of a hurry to go back to Bungo.

I did get lucky once and sank the freighter before she knew I was there. The only way through when they are around (within hydrophone range) is to go to silent running and stay out of their way. I just stop now and wait until they are on a leg going away from me before I continue. Not very aggressive, but my boat and crew still live.

They do have a super-normal way of hearing you. Your only chance (if you manage to survive the freighter's first attack) is to be at periscope depth and fire off two torpedoes into her (one does not kill her), and then go after the destroyer. The destroyer is actually less of a threat, but still very dangerous. I've only pulled that off one time. I've saved a mission going into Bungo Strait just to try and find a way through. Stealth is the only way that works consistently. Yield to the temptation and sink just one fat tanker coming through the straight, and the anti-sub team will be all over you. Avoid the temptation so you can live to complete the mission at hand, is my advice! Good luck. :salute:

The freighter is interesting - I'd never heard of it until this post. It puts one event from my trip to Hiroshima into a different light. It was daylight and my batteries were low, so I was lying up, at periscope depth, in a small bay. I thought I'd be well out of the way of commercial traffic and escorts. anyway I was snapped out of my rest by a freighter that started firing at my periscope. I put two fish into it, thinking it was a trifle aggressive for a cargo vessel, not to mention out of its way. It was unaccompanied though. I wonder if that was the same one......

I used to hunt in the Bungo a lot. I was only sank once by the 12 escorts around the Yamato. All other times Pete was no where to be found. I found the bungo to easy at times.
